I. In each of the triangles below, calculate the missing side/s and/or angle/s. Give your answer correct
to 2 decimal places.
II. FOR EACH PROBLEM, READ THE QUESTION AT LEAST TWICE BEFIORE DRAWING A CLEAR
DIAGRAM. IDENTIFY THE RIGHT-ANGLES TRIANGLE AND DO THE TRIGONOMETRY. CHECK THAT
YOU HAVE ANSWERED THE QUESTION. ANSWER CORRECT TO 2 DECIMAL PLACES.

1. Anne stands on level ground, at B, 20 meters away from the foot C of a tree (CDR). She whips out
her handy pocket clinometer and measures the angle of elevation of the top of the tree (from her
eye height of 1.6 meters above the ground) as 32˚. How tall is the tree?

2. Anne still stands on level ground, a distance away from the foot of a building known to be 174.6
m high. What will the angle of elevation be from a distance of:
(a) 50 meters away
(b) 100 meters away?

3. Anne drops her pocket clinometer off the top of the leaning tower of Pisa. It falls to the ground,
3m from the base of the tower. The tower was then leaning at an angle of 87.1˚ to the ground.
How far did it fall?

4. A rectangle is 100 meters long and 50 meters wide. Find the acute angle between the diagonals.
5. A marksman aims at a target bullseye 60 meters away but just before he pulls the trigger he is
distracted and swings the rifle and angle of a quarter of a degree. By how many centimeters will
the bullet miss the bullseye?
6. A searchlight shines on a flying saucer vertically above is. Another searchlight shines on the saucer
but it’s beam makes an angle of 15˚ to the vertical. The lights are 2 kilometers apart. Find the
altitude of the flying saucer, in meters.
7. A line on a graph joins the origin to the point (6,15). What angle does the line make with the x
axis?
8. A regular octagon with sides of 10 meters fits exactly inside a circle. Find the radius of the circle.
9. A child sits on a swing which is not moving. The rope is 400 centimeters long and the child’s seat
is 50 centimeters above the ground. The child swings and at the extremity of her movement the
rope makes an angle of 41˚ with the vertical. How far above the ground is her seat now?
10. A ship’s sonar locates a treasure chest at a 12˚ angle of depression. A diver is lowered 40 meters
to the ocean floor. How far does the driver need to swim along the ocean floor to get the treasure
chest?
