INSTRUCTION: Using your own words and penmanship, enumerate and explain exhaustively the

answers of the following questions:

1. What are the conducts that an engineer should be observed in dealing with his/her fellow
engineer in order for him/her to be successful and to be true to his/her concerns?
i) Protection of fellow engineers – As we become engineers in the near future, it is very
important that we build a professional partnership within one another. A brotherhood that
will be cautious and mindful when it comes to one another. We should always be open
handed if one of our fellow engineers is in crisis or in a problematic situation. We, engineers,
are the only one that understand one another therefore, we need to protect, guide, and
help each other.
ii) Fairness and Tolerance – Engineers must think of one another as brother that guides,
upholds, and look for one another. Engineers must treat themselves as equally challenged
when it comes to work, show respect within one another, and let all be feel at home.
iii) Merits not due – Engineers must respect one another by means of supporting one’s
accomplishment and not by taking credits while doing nothing. Never claim falsely the
accomplishment of your fellow engineers for you know what it takes to achieve such things.
If you want to be credited, then do your part or lend a hand in the best that you can.
iv) Review of colleague’s work – Engineers should always review or inspect thoroughly the
work of your colleague to avoid misinterpretation or chaos. If the work causes harm,
necessary action thereof must be done, but in a professional and formal way. In every
workplace, it is essential to always observe fellowship or camaraderie and not jealousy.
v) Controversies with colleagues – Jealousy is one of the factors that affect the relationship of
work colleagues. Misunderstanding that leads to controversies is unavoidable but it should
be done in a legal process by submitting queries to Philippine Society of Engineering with
the purpose of resolving the issue.
vi) Solicitation of undertakings or clients – It is unethical and immoral to take the client of your
colleague without his/her consent. It is an act of disrespect to get the work of your
colleague from a client by offering more than your colleague offered. Let us, engineers,
support one another and lend a hand if necessary and not taking advantages or greedy for
your own sake. Be professional because we are educated and hopefully, mannered.
vii) Signing plans and specifications – It is stated by the law that only a duly licensed engineer is
allowed to sign plans and specifications for an engineering work or projects. Moreover,
unauthorized person is prohibited to do so. Those who will be caught will be punished under
legal processes.
2. What are the norms of behavior that an engineer should observed in dealing with his/her clients
or employer in order to perform his/her obligation as a professional?
i) Protection to client or employer – It is the duty of the engineer to secure and his/her
clients’ information, confidentially. Engineer must always consider the interest of his/her
client to avoid misunderstanding or conflict. Engineer must priority the needs of the clients
and accountable for the process underway of the project.
ii) Quality and dedicated service – Engineers must provide full service in compliance to the
standard work of an engineer. It is his/her duty to priority and dedicate his/her service to
only one client or employer at a time and/or can entertain more client but with the consent
of the employer and/or depending on the weight of the work. Also, if problems occur during
the process and uncertainty of the work is felt, engineers must refer the work to the same
licensed engineers and tell the clients about the inadequacy and confront problem. After
referring the work to the other licensed engineer, provide or present explanation about the
work to be done including the diagram and sketches.
iii) Reasonable professional fees – Engineers should always consider moral and legal factors
when it comes to professional fees. Yes, it takes effort, time, and patience to do the work
but as a professional, there are some factors to be considered in order for them to charge
the clients with regards to the service and result of the work. These factors may include: the
outcome of the work done, the quality of the work, customary charges for similar jobs
within the locality, character or the undertaking, and certainty or consistency of the work.
iv) On commissions, rebates, percentages, etc. – Engineers must only entertain one client at a
time unless with consent from the both parties. Accepting many clients may affect the
possible outcome of the work for both parties. Thus, this action could create under pressure
work, uncertainty of the work outcome, and many consequences. However, this also in
favor to the engineers because of extra incomes and more experiences.
v) Disclosure of financial interest – Engineers may face conflict with regards to financial
interest which may results to misunderstanding or chaos. This situation could occur if the
line of interest between the engineers and the clients with its financial matter varies. Thus,
engineers must always be professional in regard to this matter by talking to the client
timely, calmly and refrain from any possible misunderstanding.

a guideline to how the engineers should act, what are the things every engineer must
consider, and what are the legal and illegal actions that the engineers must know.
