Who developed Telford Construction

Thomas Telford
 Telford Construction was developed by
Thomas Telford (a Scottish engineer) in early
19th century
 He believed in using heavy foundation stone
above the soil subgrade in order to keep the
road foundation firm
 A major improvement on the work of
Trésaguet.

FEATURES OF TELFORD CONSTRUCTION

Telford Construction
 The road foundation was built using stones ranging in
size from 17 to 22 cm.
 Broken stones mixed with lime mortar were utilized
along the edges, and angular stones measuring 7 cm in
size and 10 cm thick were used in the center.
 Construction was done on a worn surface with a slope of
1 in 45 and a thickness of 4 cm.
 Cross drains, which were often installed below the
foundation level, were offered at intervals of almost 90m.

TELFORD CONSTRUCTION PROCESS

TELFORD CONSTRUCTION PROCESS

 A level subgrade was prepared to design width of about 9 meters
 Large foundation stones of thickness 17 cm to 22 cm were laid
with their largest face down so as to be in stable position.
 The thickness of foundation stone varied for 17 cm at edges to 22
cm at center for the slope 1 in 45.
 The interstices between foundation stone will be filled by broken
rock pieces and properly compacted.
 The central portion of about 5.5 mm with was covered with two
layers compacted with 10 cm and 5 cm.
 A binding layer of wearing course 4 cm thick was constructed on
the top using gravel.

ADVANTAGES OF TELFORD CONSTRUCTION

Telford Construction especially in road building involved the digging of a large

trench in which it contains of solid foundation made of heavy rocks.
This construction in road is designed to sloped downwards from the centre,
allowing drainage to take place.
It improved on methods for the building of roads by improving the selection of
stone based on thickness, taking into account traffic, alignment and slopes.
