What is Poetry?
 is a type of literature based on the interplay of words and
rhythm.
 it often employs rhyme and meter.

Elements of Poetry
When you read a poem, pay attention to some
basic ideas:
Voice (who is speaking? How are they speaking?)

Stanzas (how lines are grouped)

Sound (includes rhyme, but also many
patterns)

Rhythm (what kind of “beat” or meter does the

poem have?)

Figures of Speech (many poems are full of

metaphors and other figurative language)

Form (there are standard types of poems)

Sampaguita
By: Natividad Marquez

Little sampaguita,
With wondering eye,
Did a tiny fairy
Drop you where you lie?

In the witching hour

Of a tropic night
Did a careless moonbeam
Leave you in its flight?
WHAT IS THE POEM ALL ABOUT?

The poem Sampaguita is about the story of the

innocent delicate kid who loves playing outside. But
she does not have a chance to play because it rained.
Although, she did not have a chance to play, there will
still be tomorrow to hope, enjoy, and play.
Theme:
For me, the theme of the poem is even though
there are circumstances that we couldn’t do what we
wanted, due to hindrances, we still have tomorrow to
be hopeful and to do what isn’t achievable yesterday.

Speaker:
The speaker is the author who is asking something
from a little girl about a certain happening in her life.

Structure:
The poem consists of two stanzas containing four lines
each.
Rhythm:
The rhythm of the poem is not free verse because
it has words that has the same ending sounds as the
words eye and lie, night and flight.

Stanza Type:
Quatrain

Imagery:
• Personification – “Little sampaguita, with
wondering eye”.
The Sea
By: Natividad Marquez

Why does the sea laugh, Mother

As it glints beneath the sun?
It is thinking of the joy, my child
That it wishes every one.

Why does the sea sob so, Mother

As it breaks on the rocky shore?
It recalls the sorrows of the world,
And weeps forever more.
Why is the sea so peaceful, Mother
As if it were fast asleep?
It would give our tired heart, dearest child
The comfort of the deep.
Theme:
The poem revolves around the sea which represents
the life of people in this world.

Speaker:
The speakers in the poem are the child and his/her
mother.
Structure:
This poem has three stanzas, 12 lines (4 lines for each
stanza), and the rhyming pattern is ABCB in all stanzas.
Rhythm:
The rhythm is not free verse since it has
rhyming pattern which is ABCB.

Stanza Type:
Quatrain
Imagery:
• “Why does the sea laugh” (sense of hearing)

human emotions.

and actions (e.g., “It is thinking of the joys, my child”).
