WAGON PAINTING

Preparation of the surface before

Painting
• The purpose of cleaning is to remove dirt, oil, grease, rust
and other contaminants, which would prevent the paint
film from adhering to the metal or would provide a nucleus
for commencement of corrosion.
• Cleaning by hammering, chiselling or scraping is
unsatisfactory and should not be resorted to.
• The surface cleaning may be done by vigorously scrubbing
with a stiff brush. All welded parts and adjacent surfaces
should be thoroughly cleaned to remove residual alkaline
flux and washed with hot water.
• Surfaces, which will become inaccessible after assembly
must be given complete painting before assembly.
Application of Paint
The priming paint shall be applied immediately after grit/shot blasting of
surface cleaning of steel, at the most within 4 hours after surface preparation.
The priming paint should be applied by spray or brush depending on the
circumstances and the paint quality suitable for the type of application method
adopted.
With brush application, the brush marks should not be very deep and the
minimum thickness of paint should be available at the valley of brush marks.
Painting shall not be done in wet weather except in a shed or shop where
there is protection from falling and driving, rain or heavy mist.
In wet weather the material painted under cover, shall be kept under it till the
paint in dry.
In dry weather adequate steps shall be taken to protect the article or stock
from dust, both during painting and until the same has been fully dry.
All surfaces to be painted must be dry before application of paint and must be
protected from weather till the painted surface has hardened beyond the
possibility of change by weather.
