    1) Earthquakes are caused by the sudden shaking and movement of the Earth's crust along faults or cracks in the Earth, and are most commonly caused by the movement of tectonic plates. 2) There are three main types of earthquake-causing waves that travel through the Earth - P, S, and L waves. Earthquakes are measured using both the seismograph and Richter scale. 3) Earthquakes can have both constructive and destructive effects - they release large amounts of energy but can also cause destruction, submerge land, trigger volcanic eruptions and tsunamis, and destroy buildings. Most earthquakes occur in the Pacific Ring of Fire around the Pacific Ocean.
