DATA GATHERING
INSTRUMENTS
DATA CAN BE GATHERED OR COLLECTED
THROUGH:

1. Interviews
INTERVIEWS
Interviews are one of the most common qualitative data-
collection methods, and they’re a great approach when you
need to gather highly personalized information.
INTERVIEWS
Informal, conversational interviews are ideal for
open-ended questions that allow you to gain rich,
detailed context.
EXAMPLES
“What would you do if you will be given 100
million pesos?”
EXAMPLES
“When can you say that a person is
successful?”
EXAMPLES
“How would you describe your pandemic
experience?”

DATA COLLECTION
DATA CAN BE GATHERED OR COLLECTED
THROUGH:

1. Interviews
2. Surveys
OPEN ENDED SURVEY
Open-ended surveys and questionnaires allow
participants to answer freely at length, rather than
choosing from a set number of responses.
OPEN ENDED SURVEY
Open-ended surveys and questionnaires are more
time friendly unlike interviews. Researchers only
need to provide the questionnaire and let the
respondents write their narrative freely on the space
provided by the researchers.
EXAMPLE
“Why do Filipinos value close family
ties?”
EXAMPLE
“What is the most important
Filipino culture for you?”

THROUGH:

1. Interviews

3. Observations
OBSERVATION
Observation is a method in which a data collector
observes subjects in the course of their regular
routines, takes detailed field notes, and/or records
subjects via video or audio.
EXAMPLE
A researcher spends 30 days
observing the SHS students’
behaviors during classes.
EXAMPLE
James watched CCTV recordings of
nurses and doctors performing their
duties during the pandemic.

ASSIGNMENT
Lastly, compose a synthesis of your learning on
data gathering instruments. List down two
topics which you need clarification and two
topics that you truly understand and explain
why.
