Understanding Equations
x pavement

pavement
Corner lot
6m

7m x
Observe the figure of the corner lot together with the pavement. As
shown, it is also a rectangle and the total area covered is 56 sq. m. The
dimensions are now represented by x + 6 as the length and x + 7 as the
width.

56= (x + 6) ( x + 7)

Based on the equation, 56 is the product of a number increased by 6 and the

number increased by 7.
a. Let us list possible factors that give a product of 56.
b. How many factors of 56 are there?
c. Are all the factors of 56 integers only?

By having x + 6 as the one of the factors, and x + 7 as the factor, what do we get
as value for x?

Zero Product Property

Zero product property states

that when the product of two factors
must be equal to zero.
For example, if (x - 1)(x + 3) = 0, then x - 1 or x + 3 = 0.
Algebraically, if ab = 0, ana and b are expressions, then a = 0 or b =
0.

To solve for the solution of the equation using the zero product
property:
a. Isolate the zero on one side;
b. factor the equation;
c. factor the equation;
d. apply the zero product property by equating each factor to zero;
then
e. solve for the variable.

Since the equation do not show a product equal to zero,
the process of solving the equation is illustrated as:

56 = (x + 6)(x + 7)
0 = (x + 6)(x + 7) - 56 (a)
0 = x2 + 13x + 42 - 56
0 = x2 + 13x - 14 (b)
0 = (x + 14) (x - ) (c)
x + 14 = 0 x-1=0 (d)
x = -14 x=1 (e)

Example 1:
2x2 - 10x =4x
2x2 - 10x -4x = 0
2x2 - 14x = 0
2x(x - 7) = 0
2x = 0 x-7=0
x=0 x=7

Hence, the solutions of 2x2 - 10x = 4x are x = 0 and x = 7.

Example 2:
x2 - 25 = 0
(x + 5)(x - 5) = 0
x = -5 x=5
Hence, the solutions of x2 - 25 = 0 are x = -5 and x = 5

8TH GRADE
Example 3:
x2 - 12x + 36 = 0
(x - 6) (x - 6) = 0
x-6=0
x=6

Hence, the solution of x2 - 12x + 36 = 0 is x = 6

Example 4:
A pair of concecutive integers gives a
product of 156. What are these integers?
Let x = 1st integer
x + 1 = next integer
Solution: x(x + 1) = 156
x2 + x = 156
x2 + x - 156 = 0
(x + 13) ( x - 12) = 0
x + 13 = 0 x - 12 = 0
x = -13 x = 12
If x = -13, then the concecutive integers are -13 and -12
If x = 12, then t concecutive integers are 12 and 13.
