B. Course Title: Foundation of Social Studies
C. Prerequisite: None
D. Credit Units: 3 Units
C. Course Description:
This course is designed to help the students develop an in-depth
understanding of the nature, scope and significance of social studies. It
provides them with an overview of methods, strategies, materials,
curriculum and activities in teaching Social Studies. This course will equip
students with the knowledge and skills to teach Social Studies. It focuses
on the following concerns:
1) nature and the origin of the subject; 2) personal and professional qualities of
Social Studies teachers; 3: the old and current curriculum in our educational system;
4: planning and orchestrating instruction; 5) the context for teaching and 6)
assessing learning. Through these, the Social studies majors will gain competence in
teaching the subject and eventually lead their future in a higher standard education .
This is a combination of history, geography, sociology, basic science, economics,
anthropology, archaeology, and psychology. However, this course will mainly focus
on the introduction in teaching social studies. This course will help students to
develop an understanding of teaching students about historical and physical
surroundings, thus, they will be able to think critically and develop the skills,
strategies, and habits of mind required for effective inquiry and communication.
Ultimately, students will realize the importance of social studies and that their
effective delivery of instruction will produce well-educated and informed citizens in
a culturally diverse and interdependent world and to participate and compete in a
global economy.
COURSE OUTCOME:
• At the end of the course, the students will be able to:
• 1. comprehend the concept, nature, and scope of the social studies;
• 2. appreciate the significance social studies as interconnected subjects
that inform human relationships with people, events, and places;
• 3. adopt the role of planning of curriculum in teaching Social Studies;
• 4. apply the modern innovative teaching approaches in teaching
Social Science; and
• 5. contribute in the improvement of Social Studies instruction in the
country.

Module 3: The Social Studies Curriculum
Module 4: Dimension of Cultural Diversity in Teaching
Module 5 : The Learning Domains of Teaching
Module 7: Teaching Approaches and Strategies in Social
Studies
Module 8: The different Assessment in Social Studies
Teaching and Learning
Module 9: Lesson Planning in Social Studies
Grading Criteria:
To pass this course, one must accumulate at least 75
points through the course requirements discussed
above. The maximum points that a student can obtain
through each requirement are shown below:

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Aside from the major course outputs stated above, the
students must attend the class regularly, must participate
actively the online class activity and class discussions. Lastly,
the students must have a copy of CHED required
hand-out/book on The Foundation of Social Studies.
