Chapter 3: Computer Hardware Input, Process, Output, Storage and Network

Computer Hardware:
refers to the physical equipment or componets of an electronic
data processing. It is also composed of input, output and storage
and network devices.

Quite simply, computer hardware is the physical components that

a computer system requires to function. It encompasses everything
with a circuit board that operates within a PC or laptop; including
the motherboard, graphics card, CPU (Central Processing Unit),
ventilation fans, webcam, power supply, and so on.

Input devices
are the hardware devices which take information from user
of the computer system, convert it into electrical signals
and transmit it to the processor.

An input device is a piece of equipment used to provide

data and control signals to an information processing
system, such as a computer or information appliance.
Examples of input devices include keyboards, mouse,
scanners, cameras, joysticks, and microphones.

Microphone
The function of a microphone
in a computer is to pick up
sound, just like a microphone
used by a singer on stage, and
convert the audio sound waves
into electrical signals. From
there, these electrical signals
travel to the sound card, where
they are converted into digital
signals, able to be processed by
the computer.

Monitor
The most important difference between these
monitor types is the technology used to create an
image.

Chapter 3: Computer Hardware Input, Process, Output, Storage and Network

A cathode-ray tube(CRT) Monitor
is a vacuum tube containing one or more electron guns, which emit electron
beams that are manipulated to display images on a phosphorescent screen.
The images may represent electrical waveforms, pictures, radar targets, or
other phenomena. A CRT on a television set is commonly called a picture
tube.

A liquid-crystal display
is a flat-panel display or other electronically modulated optical
device that uses the light-modulating properties of liquid crystals
combined with polarizers. Liquid crystals do not emit light
directly, instead using a backlight or reflector to produce images
in color or monochrome.

Why do computers need output devices?
A computer can still work without an output
device. However, you'd have no way of
determining what the computer is doing. Using
an output device, you can view and get the
results of input from a computer.

computer that interprets and manipulates
incoming data during this stage.

Storage Device
Alternatively referred to as digital storage, storage, storage
media, or storage medium, a storage device is
any hardware capable of holding information either temporarily
or permanently. The picture shows an example of a drobo, an
external secondary storage device.

A magnetic disk is a storage device that uses a magnetization
process to write, rewrite and access data. It is covered with a
magnetic coating and stores data in the form of tracks, spots
and sectors. Hard disks, zip disks and floppy disks are
common examples of magnetic disks.

Optical storage is any storage type in which data
is written and read with a laser. Typically, data is
written to optical media such as compact discs
(CDs) and digital versatile discs (DVDs).
