2. Illustrating Geometric
7&8 Sequence
WHAT IS THE SUM OF ALL INTEGERS
FROM 1 TO 100?

1 + 2 + 3 + . . .+ 98 + 99 + 100?

Can you do it in less than a minute?

A famous story tells that this was the problem given
by an elementary school teacher to a famous
mathematician to keep him busy. Do you know that
he was able to get the sum within seconds only? His
name was Karl Friedrich Gauss (1777-1885). Do
you know how he did?
1. What is the sum of 1 and 100, 2 and 99, 3 and
98, . . .50 and 51?

2. How many pairs are there in #1?

3. From your answers in #1 and #2, how do you get the

sum of the integers from 1 to 100?

4. What is the sum of the integers from 1 to 100?

The sum of the terms of an arithmetic
sequence.

FIND THE SUM OF THE FOLLOWING

ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE:
1. 3, 6, 9, 12 30

2. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 30

+...
n = 16?

2. Find the sum of the integers from 1 to 40 inclusive?

Geometric
Sequence
A geometric progression or geometric sequence is a
sequence where each term after the first is obtained
by multiplying the preceding term by a non-zero
constant called the common ratio.
n 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Sequence 2 4 8 16
Remember:

• The formula for the sum of the first n terms of an

arithmetic sequence is

•A geometric sequence is a sequence where each term after the

first is
obtained by multiplying the preceding term by a non-zero
constant
