Graphene as a Replacement for Silicon

 Worlds first 2D crystal

 Allotrope of Carbon
 Single layer hexagonal structure
 Obtain from simple and abundant form of carbon graphite
 Thinnest Imaginable material (thinness bring about inherent
flexibility not found in Si)
Optical Properties Electrical Properties

 Density of graphene 0.77 mg/m2  Different Electronic structure

 Graphene despite its only 1 atom thick, still visible to naked eye.  High electrical conductivity.
 Optical Transparency- ability to absorb just 2.3 % of light falling on it.  Conductivity further can be increase by applying electric field.
 Thinnest possible material.  Electrical conductivity of sheets are 10 times that of copper.
 Best know conductor.
Electronic Properties
Mechanical Properties
 No band gap or Zero band gap: highly conductive
 Strength-1000 times stronger than steel Example: AFM.
 High electron mobility at RT (100 times of Si).
 Tensile strength exceeds : 1TPa.
 Resistivity of graphene sheet would be 10-6 Ω cm.
 Held together by Vander wall forces.
 Highest current density at RT.
 Stretchable up to 20% of its initial length.
 Highest charge carriers mobility, value of 10,000-20,000 cm /Vs reported.
2

 Largest active surface area (3,000 m2 per gram).

Thermal Properties
 Thermodynamically most stable and perfect thermal conductor.
 Thermal conductivity is much higher than all other carbon
structure such as CNT, graphite and diamond (>500W/m/k) at RT.
 Thermal conductance of graphene is isotropic: same in all
directions.
Uniqueness of Graphene Applications

 Unique Structure and no band gap  Definitely replace silicon and germanium as device materials.

 All in on properties  Conducting material on PCBs.

 Simple fabrication techniques and cost effective.  Solar cell, Sensors, Touchscreen, Ultra capacitor.

 Abundant element and photosensitive.  Graphene Transistors

 Thermal stability and great strength.  Graphene Integrated circuits

 High conductivity and mobility 100 times faster than Si.  Graphene Chips and Non-volatile Memory device.

 Transparency  Heat Dissipation
