Reptiles
What are Reptiles?

Reptiles are air-breathing vertebrates

covered in special skin made-up of
scales, bony plates, or a combination
of both.
What are Reptiles?

Reptiles, like amphibians, are

ectotherms (what used to be called
“cold-blooded”). This means that
they can't produce sufficient internal
heat to maintain a constant body
temperature.

Early Reptiles

The origin of reptiles lies about 320-310 million

years ago, in the swamps of the late
Carboniferous Period, when the first reptiles
evolved from advanced reptiliomorph
labyrinthodonts.
Early Reptiles

One of the earliest undisputed reptiles was

Hylonomus. Soon after the first amniotes
appeared, they diverged into three groups
(Synapsids, Anapsids, and Diapsids) during the
Hylonomu Permian Period.
s
Early Reptiles

The early amniotes quickly

evolved into two main lines: SYNAPSIDS

Synapsids include all mammals,

including extinct mammalian species.

Sauropsids were further divided into

Anapsids and Diapsids.
SAUROPSIDS
• Diapsids which gave rise to dinosaurs and birds
• Anapsids which don't have openings near their
temples

Rise of Dinosaurs
Permian Reptiles

Near the end of the Carboniferous

• The synapsids evolved the first fully

terrestrial large vertebrates the pelycosaurs,
such as Edaphosaurus.

• The Edaphosaurus continued and

flourished throughout the Permian and
eventually disappearing at the close of the
period.
Permian Reptiles

Near the end of the Carboniferous

• The Diapsids split into two main lineages: the

Archosaurus (ancestors of crocodiles and
dinosaurs) and Lepidosaurus (predecessors of
modern lizards and snakes) both remaining lizard-
like and relatively small and inconspicuous during
the Permian.

Trivia about
Reptiles
Are all Dinosaurs
reptiles
?
YES!
The reptiles, as historically defined, are
paraphyletic, since they both excluded birds and
mammals. These respectively evolved from
dinosaurs and from early therapsids, which were
traditionally called reptiles.
