OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

•Identify the two systems of measurements;
•Read measurements in inches and centimeters
found in different measuring tools; and
•Value the significance of measurements in
dressmaking.
MELCS
•Apply the systems of
measurements
•Perform simple calculations
based on the job requirement
BASIC ARITHMETIC
OPERATION
APPLY THE
SYSTEMS OF
MEASUREMENTS
Applying the systems of measurements in
dressmaking helps you in getting the correct
body measurements.
You need to study how to read the
measuring tool using inches or
centimeters for you to know and
become familiar in taking the
measurements.
TWO SYSTEMS OF MEASUREMENT

Metric System
English System
METRIC SYSTEM
A decimal system of measures
based on a unit of length known as
meter, from the Greek word metron
means “measure”.
•The unit of measurement
more commonly used is
centimeter.
HOW TO READ CENTIMETER?
ENGLISH SYSTEM
-the basic unit of the English System is
inches.
Mathematical application is used in
order to have an accurate division of the
measurements of body parts and at the
same time, in measuring the length and
width of the materials.
In this process, the four
fundamentals of operations such
as Multiplication, Division,
Addition and Subtraction is
involved.

CONVERSION
CHART
LET’S TRY TO CONVERT INCHES TO
CENTIMETER
7 inches to cm

1inch = 2.54 cm
7 in = 2.54 cm = 17.78 cm
1in
LET’S TRY TO CONVERT CENTIMETER TO
INCHES
17.78 cm to inches

17.78 cm = 1in
1 2.54 cm
WRITE TRUE IF THE
STATEMENT IS RIGHT. IF
WRONG, WRITE FALSE AND
CHANGE THE UNDERLINED
WORD TO MAKE THE
STATEMENT CORRECT.
1.There are two systems of measurement: English which
uses inches as its unit and the Metric which uses
diameter.
FALSE - centimeter
2. Metric is a decimal system of physical unit of length known as
the meter.
TRUE
3. The Greek word metron means “measure”.
