EXPECTATIONS

At the end of the learning period, the students should be able to:

A. cite the two systems of measurements;

B. perform simple calculations, and
C. exhibit patience in understanding today’s lesson.

PRETEST

Before we start with our lesson, let us determine how much you know about
Conversion units. Take this test.

Directions: Read each item carefully and encircle the letter of the best answer from
the choices below.

1. An example of this system of measurement is inches.

a. British system c. English system
b. Decimal system d. Metric System

2. The system where the unit of measurement is centimeter.

a. British system c. English system
b. Decimal System d. Metric system

3. One inch is equivalent to:

a. 2.54 cm c. 5.24 cm
b. 2.64 cm d. 6.24 cm

4. This is an electronic device that can speed up computation.

a. calculator c. cellphone
b. camera d. drone

5. How many yards are there in 3.6576 meters? .

a. two c. four
b. three d. five
RECAP

Let’s take a quick review of our previous lesson.

1. What do you call the measurement taken around the body? _______________.

2. What measurement is taken around the smallest part of the waist? __________.

3. What measurement is taken by wrapping the tape measure from the

shoulder around the armpit? ______________________.

LESSON 8: Body Measurements:

Conversion of Units

When you begin to sew, you realize that you need mathematics to determine
body parts are measured and recorded accurately for a correct fit. To do this, the
four fundamental operations may be involved.

The Four Fundamental Operations are:

1. Multiplication
2. Division
3. Addition
4. Subtraction

For simple calculations, this is commonly referred to as MDAS. Aside from

measuring body parts, this can also be used to determine the length and width of
materials and approximate the cost needed to produce a garment.

1. Measurement of Body Parts

There are 2 systems of measurement, the English System which uses inches
as the standard unit and the Metric System which uses centimeter. In garments
measurement, both the centimeters and inches are used.
Sample Measurements

Actual Body Actual Body

Body Parts Measurement Measurement in
in Inches Centimeters
Shoulder 15 38.1
Bust 34 86.36
Hips 36 91.44
Waist 26 66.04
Sleeve Length 8 20.32
Skirt/Pants length 32 81.28

2. Length and Width of Fabrics

Both the English and Metric system can be used in measuring the length and
width of materials.

Sample Conversion Chart (inches to centimeter)

¼ inch (in) 0.635 centimeter (cm)

½ in 1.27 cm
¾ in 1.905 cm
1 in 2.54 cm
1.5 in 3.81 cm
2 in 5.08 cm
2.5 in 6.35 cm

Sample Conversion Chart (yard to meter)

1 yard (yd) 0.9144 meter (m)

2 yards 1.8288 m
3 yards 2.7432 m
4 yards 3.6576 m

Other Conversions

1 foot (1ft ) 12 inches (12” )

1 yard 3 feet
1 yard 36 inches
1 yard 91.44 cm
Note:

a. To convert an amount from inches to cm, multiply the amount by 2.54.

Example: Convert 8 inches (in) to centimeter (cm).

8 x 2.54 = 20.32 cm

b. To convert an amount from yard to meter, multiply the amount by 0.9144.

Example: Convert 2.5 yards to meter.

2.5 x 0.9144 = 2.286 m

c. To convert an amount from cm to inches, divide the amount by 2.54.

Example: Convert 9 cm to inches.

9 ÷ 2.54 = 3.543 in

d. To convert an amount from meter to yard, divide the number by 0.9144.

Example : Convert 5 meters to yard.

5 ÷ 0.9144 = 5.468 yd

3. Costs Required

Simple calculations are often used to calculate the cost of buying the materials
to be used in making clothes or dresses.

Example:
You need to purchase 30 inches of fabric to be used to make washable face
masks for your family members. The cost of the fabric is P2.00 per centimeter.
How much will you need to buy it?

Step 1. Convert inches to centimeter.

30 inches
X 2.54 cm
76.2 cm

Step 2. Multiply the converted length of fabric to the cost per

centimeter.
76.2 cm
X P2.00
P 152.40
ACTIVITIES

Activity 1

Directions. Write the equivalent measurements of the following:

1. How many centimeters are there in 9 inches ? _________________

2. The tailor needs to buy 120 inches length of fabric that cost P3.00 per
centimeter. Find the total cost of the fabric______________________

3. 6 inches = _______ cm.

4. 1.5 ft = ______inches

5. How many inches are there in 7.62 cm? _________________.
