2. Loida walked 204 meters to her classmate’s house and together they walked 523 meters to
school. How many kilometers was covered by Loida alone?
Questions:
1. How did you solved the problems ?
2. How did you convert meter to kilometres or vice versa ?

What’s Is It
A. Conversion of Measure of Length in English Metric System
Converting from one unit to another might be tricky at first , so an organized way of
doing it would be a good starting point . As the identity property of multiplication states, that the
product of any value and 1 is the value itself. Consequently, dividing a value by the same value
be equal to one. Thus, dividing a unit by its equivalent in another unit is equal to 1.
For example;
foot = 12 inches For long distances, mile is used
=1 =1 1 yard = 3 feet 1 mile = 1,760 yards = 5,280
feet
These conversion factors may be used to convert from one unit to another. Just remember that
you’re converting from one unit to another so canceling same units would guide you in how
to use your conversion factors.
Illustrative Example:
1. Convert 36 inches into feet :
Steps Solution
1. Multiply 36 inches by the conversion
factor ( )
36 inches x
( Note : We choose to use( )as
conversion factor because we intend to convert
inches to foot, hence we can now cancel same
units ( inches) ).
2. Cancel out same units 36 inches x

3
3. Follow the rules in multiplying fractions,
that is to multiply numerator by X =
numerator and multiply denominator by
denominator.
( Note : 36 is a whole number consider that it
has a denominator of 1 )
4. Divide , answers must be in
simplified form. Then, copy the = 3 feet
remaining unit. Therefore, 36 inches is equal to 3 feet.

Again, since the given measurement was multiplied by a conversion factors which is
equal to 1 , only the unit was actually converted but the given length was not changed .

B. Conversion of Measure of Length in Metric System

The Metric System of Measurement is easier to use than the English System of Measurement
since its conversion factors would consistently be in the decimal system, unlike the English System of
Measurement where units of lengths have different conversion factors.
The fundamental unit of length in the metric system is the meter . It is a decimal
system of measurement where multiples and fractions of the basic unit (meter) corresponds to
power of ten.
Unit Symbol Fraction or Multiple of 1 Meter

1 millimetre mm 0.001 m
1 centimetre cm 0.01 m
1 decimetre dm 0.1 m
1 metre m 1m
1 dekametre dam 10 m
1 hectometre hm 100 m
1 kilometre km 1 000 m
Because of the special relationships among units in the metric system , it is quite easy
to express a measure of length in terms of a different unit simply by multiplying by powers
of ten.
Example 1:The bike path through the park is 5.6 km. long. How many meters long is the path ?
5.6 km = ___________ m
1 km = 1000 m
When you change from a larger unit to a smaller unit , the number of units increases. So you
multiply.
5.6 x 1000 = 5 600
5.6 km = 5600 m
The bike path is 5600 m long.
Example 2 : Convert 249 cm = _________ m
1 m = 100 cm
When you change from a smaller unit to a larger unit , the number of units decreases . So you
divide .
249 ÷ 100 = 2.49
249 cm = 2.49 m
What’s More

What Is It
In finding the measure of an area, simply count the square contained within the plane figure.

Example 1 3 units A = LW
= 3units x 3 units
3 units = 9 square units
The area of the square is 9 square units.

Example 2:
5m Solution: Area = LW
= 5 m x 13 m
= 65 m2
13 m The area of the rectangle is 65 square meter (m2)

Conversion of Measure of Area in Metric System

The fundamental unit of length in the metric system is the meter . It is a decimal system of
measurement where multiples and fractions of the basic unit (meter) corresponds to power of
ten.
Fraction or Multiple of 1
Unit Symbol Meter
2
1 square millimetre mm 0.000001 m
1 square centimetre cm2 0.0001 m
1 square decimetre dm2 0.01 m
1 square meter m2 1m
2
1 square dekameter (are) dam ( a ) 100 m
1 square hectometre(hectare) hm2 (ha ) 10000 m
1 square kilometre km2 1000 000 m
5
Because of the special relationships among units in the metric system , it is quite easy
to express a measure of length in terms of a different unit using the metric converter .
The Improvised Metric Converter

When you change from a larger unit to a smaller unit the number of units increases .
 conversion is from bigger unit to small unit move the decimal point to the right
 moving the decimal point depends upon the number of spaces you count based from the
given problem multiply by 2 (constant) , since area involves two dimensions .
Example A .Use the improvised metric converter to convert 2.3 m2 to cm2.
Follow the steps :
Step 1: Place the first pointer to meter.
Step 2: Place the second pointer to centimetre.
Step 3: Count the number of spaces from meter to centimeter and multiply it by 2

In this case, the spaces from m to cm is 2 x 2 = 4 . So, you move the decimal point 4
places to the right of a given number . Therefore, 2.3 m2 is equivalent to 23, 000 cm2.

Example B:
When you change from a smaller unit to a larger unit, the number of units decreases.
 conversion from smaller unit to bigger unit - -- move the decimal point to the left
 moving the decimal point depends upon the number of spaces you count based from
the given problem multiplied by 2 (constant ), since area involves two dimensions.
Use the improvised metric converter to convert 123546 m2 to km2.
Step 1: Place the first pointer to meter.
Step 2: Place the second pointer to kilometre.
Step 3: Count the number of spaces from meter to kilometre and multiply it by 2 .

Activity 2:Solve Me!
Directions: Copy and solve the problem. Write your answer on your mathematics notebook.
A boy weighing 27.6 kilograms sits on one end of a seesaw . How many grams should a girl
weigh if she is to balance the boy on the opposite end .

What Is It
The commonly used English unit for weight is ounces (oz). Here are some of the conversion
factors for these units:
8
1 kg = 2.2 lb 1 g = 1000 mg 1 lb = 16 oz
1 metric ton = 1000 kg 1 kg = 1000 g
Use these conversion factors to convert common weight units to the desired unit.
Illustrative Example :
1. When Sebastian weighted his balikbayan box, its weight was 34 kg. When he got to the airport,
he found out that the airline charged $5 for each lb in excess of the free baggage allowance of 50
lb. How much will Sebastian pay for the excess weight?
Solution :
Step 1: 34 kg lb 34 kg x 2.2 lb / 1 kg = 74.8 lb
Step 2: 74.8 lb – 50 = 24.8 lb in excess
Step 3: Payment = (excess lb)($5)
= (24.8 lb)($5) = $124.00
The basic unit of mass in the metric system is gram (g) or kilogram ( kg ). The
interrelatedness of kilogram , liter and meter can be seen in the table below .
Unit Symbol Fraction or Multiple of 1
kilogram
1 gram ( cubic centimetre ) g (cm3 ) 0.001 kg
3
1 liter ( cubic centimetre ) L ( dm ) 1 kg
1 tonne ( cubic meter ) t ( m3 ) 1000 kg
A kilogram is the mass of 1 liter of water in its densest state. The mass of a millilitre of
water is of a kilogram , which is called a gram (g ).

Illustrative Example 1:
4.8 kg = ________ g , 1 kg = 1000 g
When you change from a larger unit to a smaller unit , the number of units increases .
So you multiply .
4.8 x 1000 = 4 800 .
4.8 kg = 4800g

Illustrative Example 2 : 1200 mg = _________g , 1 g = 1000 mg

When you change from a smaller unit to a larger unit , the number of units decreases . So
youdivide .
1200 ÷ 1000 = 1.200
1200 mg = 1.2 g
Conversion Of Units Using Metric Converter
Take note that it is also convenient to use metric converter in conversion of one unit to
another unit .
Improvised Metric converter

.
Illustrative Example A :
When you change from a bigger unit to a smaller unit the number of units increases .
conversion is from bigger unit to smaller unit move the decimal point to the left . Moving
the decimal point depends upon the number of spaces you count based from the given
problem
Use the metric converter to convert 342 dag to cg.
Step 1: Place the first pointer to dag.
Step 2: Place the second pointer to cg.
Step 3: Count the number of spaces from dag to cg.

9
In this case the number of spaces from dag to cg is 3. So you move the decimal point 3
places to the left of a given number . Therefore, 342 dag is equivalent to 342 000 cg .
Illustrative Example B :
When you change from a smaller unit to a bigger unit the number of units decreases .
 Converting of smaller unit to bigger unit, move the decimal point to the right.
 Moving the decimal point depends upon the number of spaces you count based from
the given problem
Use the metric converter to convert 455 dag to kg
Step 1: Place the first pointer to dag.
Step 2: Place the second pointer to kg.
Step 3 : Count the number of spaces from dag to kg .

In this case the number of spaces from dag to kg is 2. So you move the decimal point 2
places to the right of a given number . Therefore, 455 dag is equivalent to 4.55 kg.
