OBJECTIVE: Converts measurements from one unit to another in the Metric system.

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:

• Converting Measurements from One Unit to Another in Metric System

The metric system is the most commonly used system of measurement and easy to convert since
the units are based on the powers of 10. You can convert unit by different merely multiplying or
dividing by power of 10 or by merely moving the decimal point to the left or to the right.

TRY TO DISCOVER!

Look at the pictures below. Answer the question and justify your answer.

A. B.

❖ Before we check your answer, let us discuss first how to convert one unit to another in the metric
system.

The metric system is a system of measures which is based on powers of 10. It considers the three basic
units of measure: metres (m), litres (L) and grams (g).

What makes the metric system so useful is that all three units of measure are based on the powers of ten
(including 0.000001, 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, 100, 1000).
Let’s examine the METRIC SYSTEM CONVERSION Chart to understand this idea better.

Name: _________________________________ Grade & Section: __________________
Name of Teacher: ________________________

Units of measurement to the right of the base unit are becoming smaller. Units of measure to the left of the
base unit are becoming larger .
For example: 1 kilometer = 1,000 meters 1 millimeter = 1/1,000 meter or 1,000 millimeters = 1 meter
These conversion factors may be used to convert from big to small units or vice versa.
For example:
1 kilometer = 1,000 meters
1 millimeter = 1/1,000 meter or 1,000 millimeters = 1 meter

ARE YOU READY TO PRACTICE?

1. Convert 3 km to meters (m)

To convert kilometers to meters we need to identify first the larger unit. Looking at the
Metric System chart we notice that a meter is 1000 times smaller than a kilometer.

Solution1: (By Factor label Method)

3km = _______ m Meter is smaller than kilometer so you expect your
answer is greater than 3.
3𝑘𝑚 1000 𝑚
𝑥 = _____ m By Using the factor label method, write 3 km as
1 1𝑘𝑚
fraction and use unit fraction to convert it to m.
3𝑘𝑚 1000 𝑚
𝑥 = 3000 m We cancel out same units, then multiply and
1 1𝑘𝑚
simplify.

Therefore 3km = 3000 m

Solution 2: Converting Through Multiplication and Division

If you're unfamiliar with metric units, it can be helpful to list the metric prefixes on a line
in order of largest to smallest (see the diagram above). Put "Kilo" at the far left end of
the line and "Milli" at the far right end. In the middle of the scale, between "Deka" and
"Deci," put the base unit of the dimension you're measuring. In other words, if you're
measuring distance, write "meter," if you're measuring volume, write "liter," and mass,
write “gram”. This line gives you a simple visual reference on how are the units related.

Let us Convert 3km to m.

Identify locations of kilometers and meters.

Kilometers (km) are larger than meters
(m), so expect that there would be more than
3m in a km.

Count the intermediate units, multiplying by 10

as you move to the right to reach the unit
meter. (Since we are moving from a larger unit
to a smaller unit, we multiply.)
3km x 10 x 10 x 10 = 3000 meters Multiply to find the number of meters in three
kilometer.
Answer 3 km = 3,000 m

Solution 3: Move the Decimal Method

You can also apply the rules of base 10 to use the “move the decimal” shortcut method in this
example. Notice that meters (m) is three places to the right of kilometers (km); similarly, you move the
decimal point three places to the right when converting 3 kilometers to meters.

= =

Let’s try another example:

2. Convert 1672 cg to g.
Solution1: (By Factor label Method)
1672 cg = _______ g Gram is larger than centigram so expect the answer is less
than 1672.
By using the METRIC SYSTEM CONVERSION Chart, centigram
1
is 100 times smaller than gram. 1 cg = 𝑔.
100
1672 𝑐𝑔 1𝑔
𝑥 = _____𝑔 By Using the factor label method, write 1672 cg as fraction and
1 100 𝑐𝑔
use unit fraction to convert it to g.
1672 𝑐𝑔 1𝑔 1672 𝑔
𝑥 100 𝑐𝑔 = = 16.72 𝑔 We cancel out the same unit, then we multiply and simplify.
1 100

Answer: 1672 cg = 16.72g

Solution 2: Converting Through Multiplication and Division

Step 1: Identify locations of centigrams and grams. Centigrams (cg) are smaller than grams (g), so
expect that there would be less than 1672 cg in a g.

Step 2: Count the intermediate units, dividing by 10 as we move. Since we are moving from a smaller
unit to a larger unit, we divide.

Step 3: Divide to find the number of grams in 1672 centigrams.

therefore, 1672 ÷ 10 ÷ 10 = 16.72 𝑔 𝑶𝑹 1672 ÷ 100 = 16.72 𝑔

Answer: 1672 cg = 16.72 g

• Notice that the shortcut method of counting prefixes and moving the decimal the same number
of places also works here

Solution 3: Converting Through Decimal Movement

First Determine the direction and size of the conversion.

We are converting smaller unit to larger unit. We move the decimal point going to the left.
How many jumps is it from "kilo-" to "centi-"? I'll count off.

We move two jumps to the left. Locate the decimal point

And move it two units to the left.
2 1
therefore the answer is 1672 cg = 16.72 g

Convert each measurement to the indicated unit.

1. 25 mi = ______ km

1.6 𝑘𝑚
Since 1 mi = 1.6 km, we change it to a fraction so that the
1 𝑚𝑖
existing unit mi will be cancelled out to leave the new unit km.
1.6 𝑘𝑚
25 mi x = 40 km
1 𝑚𝑖

Therefore, 25 mi = 40 km.

2. 15 yd = ______ m
0.9 𝑚
The conversion 1 yd = 0.9 m is changed to a fraction so
1 𝑦𝑑
that the unit yd will be cancelled out leaving just the unit m.

0.9 𝑚
15 yd x = 13.5 m
1 𝑦𝑑

Thus, 15 yd = 13.5 m.

3. 15 in2 = ______ cm2

By using the conversion 1 in2 = 6.45 cm2, we have the fraction

6.45 𝑐𝑚2
. The unit in2 will be cancelled out leaving the unit cm2.
𝑖𝑛2
6.45 𝑐𝑚2
15 in2 x = 96.75 cm2
1 𝑖𝑛2

So, 15 in2 = 96.75 cm2.

4. 8 c = ______ L

Using the conversion 1 c = 0.24 L, we have the following:

0.24 𝐿
8c x = 1.92 L
1𝑐

Thus, 8 c = 1.92 L.

OBJECTIVE: Solves routine problems involving conversion of units of measurement.

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:

• Solving Routine Problems Involving Conversion of Units of Measurement

You have learned in the previous lesson how to convert measurements from one metric unit
to another and from one metric unit to English systems.
In this lesson, you are going to solve routine problems involving these conversions of
measurements.

TRY TO DISCOVER!
• How do we solve routine problems involving conversion of units of
measurement?
These are the steps that are necessary as guide in solving routine problems
involving conversion of measurements.
1. Read and analyze the problem carefully.
2. Identify what is asked.
3. Determine the given data.
4. Write an equation.
5. Solve using techniques in converting measurements, show the solution and state the
answer.
6. Check your answer.

Example 1: How much longer in centimeters is a lace with a length of 186 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑙𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠 than a
ribbon with a length of 0.159 𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠?
• What is asked?
➢ Determine how much longer in centimeters is the lace than the ribbon.
• What are the given?
➢ Lace with a length of 186 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑙𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠 and a ribbon with a length of 0.159 𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠.
• What is the equation?
➢ 186 𝑚𝑚 – 0.159 𝑚 = 𝒙 𝑐𝑚
• What is the solution and answer?
➢ We first convert the given data in 𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠:
a.) 186 𝑚𝑚 = ____ 𝑐𝑚
Note that 1 𝑐𝑚 is equal to 10 𝑚𝑚.

1 𝑐𝑚
186𝑚𝑚 𝑥 = 18.6 𝑐𝑚
10 𝑚𝑚

Thus, 186 𝑚𝑚 = 18.6 𝑐𝑚

b.) 0.159 𝑚 = ____ 𝑐𝑚

Note that 1 𝑚 is equal to 100 𝑐𝑚.

100 𝑐𝑚
0.159 𝑚 𝑥 = 15.9 𝑐𝑚
1𝑚

Thus, 0.159 𝑚 = 15.9 𝑐𝑚

Name: _________________________________ Grade & Section: __________________
Name of Teacher: ________________________

➢ Get the difference of the two measurements that were converted into
𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠.
18.6 𝑐𝑚 − 15.9 𝑐𝑚 = 2.7 𝑐𝑚
➢ Thus, the lace is 2.7 𝑐𝑚 longer than the ribbon.
• Let us check if the answer is correct using the alternative way in converting
measurements from one metric unit to another.
➢ Remember that we could also convert one metric unit to another by moving the
decimal point.
a.) 186 𝑚𝑚 = ____ 𝑐𝑚

km hm dam m dm cm mm

We move the decimal point one unit to the left to convert 𝑚𝑚 to 𝑐𝑚. That is,

186 18 6 186 𝑚𝑚 = 18.6 𝑐𝑚

b.) 0.159 𝑚 = ____ 𝑐𝑚

km hm dam m dm cm mm

We move the decimal point two units to the right to convert 𝑚 to 𝑐𝑚. That is,

0 1 5 9 0 1 5 9 0.159 𝑚 = 15.9 𝑐𝑚

➢ 18.6 𝑐𝑚 − 15.9 𝑐𝑚 = 2.7 𝑐𝑚

➢ Check: 15.9 𝑐𝑚 + 2.7 𝑐𝑚 = 18.6 𝑐𝑚

Example 2: The human body has 45 miles of nerves. How long is this in feet?
• What is asked?
➢ Determine the length of nerves of human body in feet.
• What are the given?
➢ 45 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠
• What is the equation?
5280 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑡
➢ 45 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠 𝑥 = 𝑥 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑡
1 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒
• What is the solution and answer?
➢ We know that 1 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒 is approximately equal to 5 280 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑡. Thus,
5280 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑡
45 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠 𝑥 = 237 600 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑡
1 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒
• Let us check if the answer is correct using the alternative way in converting
measurements from one metric unit to another.
➢ We know that 1 𝑓𝑜𝑜𝑡 is 0.000189 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒. Thus,
1 𝑓𝑜𝑜𝑡
45 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠 𝑥 = 238 095.24 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑡
0.000189 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒
➢ 238 095.24 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑡 is closer to 237 600 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑡. It was not exact since the ratio of
1 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑡 which is 5 280 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑡 and 1 𝑓𝑜𝑜𝑡 𝑡𝑜 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒 which is 0.000189 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠
are just approximations.
➢ Therefore, the human body has approximately 237 600 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑡.

ARE YOU READY TO PRACTICE?

Now, let us try another example. This time, you will be answering a problem
involving converting of measurement from metric unit to English unit.

MODULE IN MATHEMATICS 7
Second Quarter/ Week 2/ Day 4

OBJECTIVE: Solves non-routine problems involving conversion of units.

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:

• Solving Non-Routine Problems Involving Conversion of Units

TRY TO DISCOVER!

Let us explore how to solve some problems involving conversion of unit.

Consider this Sample Problem 1:

Nana Santos invited her friends Nene and Nono for a party. She made 2 750 mL of
MILK TEA and served it in 250-mL glasses. Nene consumed 5 glasses, while Nono
consumed 1 glass of milk tea. How much milk tea did Nana have as left over?

Write the answer as a whole number of liters and whole number of milliliters.

Solution:

We must find first the total number of glasses of milk tea Nene and Nono
consumed by adding them, 5 glasses + 1 glass which is equal to 6 glasses. Since
the milk tea was served in 250-mL glasses, we multiply 6 glasses by 250 mL/glass .

250 𝑚𝐿
6 glasses x = 1 500 mL
1 𝑔𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠

Then, subtract 1 500 mL from 2 500 mL.

2 750 mL - 1 500 mL = 1 250 mL

So, 1 250 mL of milk tea was the left over. Take note, however,
the answer must be a whole number of liters and a whole
number of milliliters.

Since 1 000 mL = 1 liter,

so, 1 250 mL could be rewritten as 1 000 mL + 250 mL

To rewrite it in whole number, this would be 1 Liter and

250 mL.

Therefore, there are 1 Liter and 250 mL of milk tea left.

Sample Problem 2:

Rene rode on his bike traveling 5 km while his brother Ronnel traveled 4000 m.
Between the two, who rode the farther and how much farther in km?

Step 1: The important facts are:

5 km and 4000 m

Step 2: Determine what is being asked and

who rode the farther and how much
in terms of km.

Step 3: Solve.
(Take note that in converting a larger unit to a smaller unit, we multiply.
While, in converting a smaller unit to a larger unit, we divide.)

Since the question is in km, convert Ronnel’s distance to km:

1 𝑘𝑚
4 000 m x = 4 km
1 000 𝑚

Step 4: Solve the difference between the distance traveled in km.

Since Rene travelled 5 km on his bike and Ronnel travelled 4 km,
we must subtract to find the difference:
5 km – 4 km = 1 km.

Therefore, Rene traveled 1 km farther than Ronnel.

Sample Problem 3:

A 35 g serving of a certain oatmeal has 3.5 g of dietary fiber. How much dietary
fiber in milligrams would be in 3 servings?

Solution: Since one serving of 35 grams of an oatmeal has 3.5 g of dietary fiber,
we can convert it in milligrams: 3.5 g = 3 500 mg
For 3 servings: 3 x 3 500 mg = 10 500mg

Therefore, there are 10 500 mg of dietary fibers

in 3 servings of oatmeal.

ARE YOU READY TO PRACTICE?

Solve the following problem:

1. Bella and her best friend Kyleigh went to a movie house to watch their
favorite movie. It started at 1:00 pm and ended at 3:45 pm. How long was
the movie?

Step 1: Write down the important facts:

• 1:00 pm and 3:45 pm (when the movie started and ended)
Step 2: Determine what is being asked:
• Find the elapsed time between the start and end of the movie.
Step 3: Find out the amount of time between 1:00 pm and 3:00
• 3:00 – 1:00 = 2 hours
Step 4: Find the number of minutes from 3:00 to 3: 45
• There are 45 minutes.
Step 5: Then, add the hours and minutes (hours always come first).
• 2 hours + 45 minutes = 2:45

Therefore, the duration of the movie is 2 hours and 45 minutes.
