Factoring Different

Types of
Polynomials
To factor a polynomial is to
express the polynomial as
the product of two or more
polynomials.
1. Factoring common
monomial factor

- In finding the factors of a given

polynomial GCF (Greatest Common
Factor) is very much in use.
- Look at the following examples:
a. Factor
  6 + 4y.
Solution:
O
First find the GCF of 6y² and 4y.
6 = 2 3  y y
4=2 2  y
2  y Bring down the
common factor, then multiply.
GCF = 2y

Next is find the other factor of 6 + 4y by the use of

GCF.
6 +  4y
O Divide each term of the given
2y 2y polynomial to its GCF.

3y + 2 Other factor

2y(3y+2) Answer (GCF & Other Factor)

Then, write each term as the product of the GCF

and its other factor.

Factor = 2y(3y + 2)
b. Factor
  6a + .
Solution:

First find the GCF of 6a, ,and .
6a = 2  3  a
=2 2 a 2a
=2 7 a aa
2  a Bring down the common
factor, then multiply.
GCF = 2a

Next is find the other factor of 6a + by the use of GCF.

6+-1 Divide each term of the given
2 2 2 polynomial to its GCF.

3+4–7 Other factor

2(3 + 4 – 7) Answer (GCF & Other

Factor
Then, write each term as the product of the GCF and its other
factor.

Factor: 2(3 + 4 – 7)
c. Factor 5y + 10.
Solution:
First find the GCF of 5y and 10.
5y = 5  y
10 = 5  2
5 Bring down the common factor.

GCF = 5

Next is find the other factor of 5y + 10 by the use of GCF.

O 5y + 10 Divide each term of the given
5 5 polynomial to its GCF.

O y+2 Other Factor

O 5(y + 2) Answer (GCF and Other Factor)

Then, write each term as the product of the GCF and

its other factor.

Factor: 5(y + 2)
2. Factoring Difference of Two
Squares
O  Recall
O that
(- ) ( + ) =
is for the first term and is form the second term.
This pattern is used to factor binomials of the
form .
O Look at the following examples:
a. Factor

O  Solution:
Find the square root of each term.
=x

And use this pattern (- ) ( + ) to find the factors of the

given. Substitute the square roots of each term to the given
pattern.
(- ) ( + ) = (x- ) ( +7)

Factor: (x- ) ( +7)

b. Factor
  4- 25.
O Solution:

Find the square root of each term.
= 2x

And use this pattern (- ) ( + ) to find the factors of the

given. Substitute the square roots of each term to the given
pattern.
(- ) ( + ) = (2x- ) ( +5)

Factor: (2x- ) ( +5)
