MODULE IN ENGLISH 7
Fourth Quarter/ Week 3/ Day 3
OBJECTIVE: Determine the truthfulness and accuracy of the material viewed
(EN7VC-I-h-10)
In every case you should verify that the information whether it is found in printed materials or
media like videos, news, television, presentation or even people if it is giving you a factual and
accurate information. In every case you need to determine what is fact and what is opinion or
what is factual and fictional. Sometimes the information presented will be extremely incorrect and
misleading, especially where politics or products are concerned.
Accuracy means not only getting the objectively verifiable ‘facts’ right - names, places,
dates of birth, quotes, the results of sporting fixtures - but accurately reporting opinions, events,
information and details.
Accuracy is not the same as truth - it’s possible to give an entirely accurate account of an
untruth. It means it gives an exact information but there are some inconsistencies with its
reliability and truthfulness.
Truthfulness and accuracy and its inconsistencies can be found on movies,
true-to-life-stores, historical movies, news, documentaries, advertising, speeches,
and printed materials. So, we need to determine the truthfulness and accuracy of the
information we viewed especially if we will use it as reference for research or project.
That is why you should verify that the information someone is giving or presenting you is
accurate and factual. In every case you need to determine what is fact and what is opinion.
Sometimes the information presented will be extremely incorrect and misleading, especially
where politics or products are concerned.
In the beginning, doing the necessary research on these things can be difficult. Do not be
fooled into believing that a statement or common belief is accurate just because a lot of people
believe it or accept it as truth. Again, verify the statement or belief. It takes only seconds in many
cases.
Some of the worst misinformation is spread virally through email forwards. For some
reason people tend to accept whatever these email forwards say without question, never even
wondering who originated the ‘forward’ or whether there is even a single word of accuracy in
them. Often there is none.
Be informed and know your facts whether they pertain to the Bible, politics, products and
services, or statistics and scientific determinations, so how do we determine the truthfulness and
accuracy on the materials we view?
1. Know the difference of facts from opinion. Opinions cannot be verified because it is based
on someone else’s belief or point of view.
2. Research the information presented including the sources, references, and citations.
3. Check the credibility of the author or reporter.
4. Do not assume. Inference is not considered as fact unless proven.
5. Only believe on evidence and figures or numbers. They say numbers do not lie.
PRACTICE EXERCISE 1:
Which is Trustworthy? – Analyze the sentences below and determine which of the topics
