arithmetic means and nth term of an arithmetic
sequence.
The nth term, an, of an arithmetic sequence with first
term, a1, and common difference, d, is given by an=
a1+ (n-1)d.
Okay, very good!

Activity

Before we will start our discussion for this morning,

we will have first
Problem of the day! Students will do the activity.
A conference hall has 20 rows of seats. The first
row contains 20 seats, the second row contains 22
seats, the third row contains 24 seats, and so on.
How many seats are there in the last row? How
many seats are there in the conference hall?

Solution:
a) We know that n=20,a1=20, a2=22,a3=24, and
d=2
an=a1+(n-1)d
a20=20+ (20-1)2
a20= 20+(19)2
a20=20+38
a20= 58
Thus, there are 58 seats in the last row.
b) Find the sum of 20,22,24,…,58.
n
Using the formula Sn= (a1+a2)
2

20
S20= (20+58)
2
S20= 10 (78)

S20= 780
Analysis Therefore, there are 780 seats in conference hall.

From the activity class, we learned that an

arithmetic sequence is a sequence whose
consecutive terms have a common difference. The
common d is the common difference in arithmetic
sequence.

Formula
 Finding for nth term of an arithmetic
sequence
 an = a1 + (n -1)d
 Finding for the sum of a given arithmetic
sequence
n
 Sn = ( a1 + an ).

Example 1:
Find the sum of the first 25 terms of the
arithmetic sequence 17,22,27,32,37,… .

S25 = ( 17 + 137 ) - Substitute the known
2
values. Answer:
S25 = 1,925 - Simplify SOLUTIONS:
Therefore, the sum of the first 25 terms of the 1. 6,9,12,15,…, a11
arithmetic sequence is 1,925. 1st : First, find a11 with a1 = 6, d = 3, and n = 11
2nd: an = a1 + (n -1)d
Practice: 3rd: a11 = 6 + (11 -1)3
Instructions: Find the sum of the terms of the 4th: a11 =6 + (10)3
following arithmetic sequence. a11 = 6 + 30
1) 6,9,12,15,…, a11 a11 = 36
2) 15,20,25,30,…, a20 Solve for Sn:
n
Sn = ( a 1 + a n )
2
11
S11 = ( 6 + 36 )
2
S11 = 5.5 (42)
S11 = 231

2. 15,20,25,30,…, a20
1st : First, find a20 with a1 = 15, d = 5, and
n = 20
2nd: an = a1 + (n -1)d
3rd: a20 = 15 + (20 -1)5
4th: a20 =15 + (19)5
a20 = 15 + 95
a20 = 110

Solve for Sn:

n
Sn = ( a 1 + a n )
2
20
S20 = ( 15 + 110 )
2
S20 = 10 (125)
S20 = 1,250

Example 2
Intructions: Find the sum of the first 38 terms of
the arithmetic sequence if the first term is 21 and
the twentieth term is 154.
Solution:
Solve for d using the formula an = a1 + (n -1)d.
a20 = a1 + (n -1)d
154 = 21 + (20 -1)d
154 = 21 + 19d
154 - 21 = 19d
7=d
Find a38
a38 = 21 + (38 -1)7
a38 = 21 + 259
a38 =280
38
Thus S38 = ( 21 + 280)
2
=19 (301)
S38 = 5,719 Students will do the activity.
Answer.
Try this! 1. a1 = 9 and d = 7
Instructions: Find the sum of the first 10 terms of 1 step:
st

each arithmetic sequence. an = a1 + (n -1)d

1. a1 = 9 and d = 7 a10 = 9 + (10 -1)7
2. a1 = 11 and a10 = 38 a10 = 9 + (9)7
a10 = 9 + 63
a10 = 72
2nd step:
Solve for Sn:
n
Sn = ( a 1 + a n )
2
10
S10 = ( 9 + 72 )
2
S10 = 5 (81)
S10 =405
2. a1 = 11 and a10 = 38
1st step:
an = a1 + (n -1)d
38 = 11 + (10 -1)d
38 = 11+ (9)d
38-11 = 11-11 + 9d
27 = 9d
3=d
2nd step:
Solve for Sn:
n
Sn = ( a 1 + a n )
2
10
S10 = ( 11 + 38)
2
S10 = 5 (49)
S10 = 245
