This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step
as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM.
This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to
ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the
lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check
your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you
will be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teachers are also provided
to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best
help you on your home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of this
SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercise and tests. Read the
instructions carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks
in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.
Thank you.
What I Need to Know
This module provides various activities that will help you to learn about the concepts on
how to use appropriate graphs to represent organized data such as pie chart, bar graph, line
graph and histogram,
What I Know
Directions: Read and understand each situation. Choose the letter of the correct answer.
Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

What’s In
We are in the laboratory of Mr. Albert, the room was so messy and the things inside it
were scattered. He couldn’t find the things he needed, he couldn’t even identify the number of
measuring device he had. Can you help him identify the measuring device he has in his
laboratory?
3
Use the cabinets below to separate the measuring device according to their use.
Cabinet A is the cabinet for measuring device for length, Cabinet B is the cabinet for measuring
device for liquid and Cabinet C is the cabinet for measuring devices for time.
What’s New
Here is Lyka, a gem collector, she wants to know how many kinds of gem she had
and how many of each kind. Can you help her collect and analyze the data?
4
Lyka provided you some of her jewelry box. Count the number of gems according to
its shape and write it inside the box.
Now that you have the data that Ms. Lyka needs, we can now identify which gem has
the greatest quantity and the lowest quantity. Write your answer inside the part of the circle
according to the number of gem. Write your answers from above on the correct section of
the pie chart by considering the quantity of each kind of gem.
5
What is It
Graph
In math, a graph can be defined as a pictorial representation or a diagram that
represents data or values in an organized manner.
The points on the graph often represent the relationship between two or more things.
Statistics
It is the science of collection, analysis and presentation of data.
Data
Data are characteristics or information, usually numerical, that are collected through
observation.
KINDS OF GRAPH
Histogram
Example of Histogram
Barangay Agnaya is a very peaceful barangay. Only few of the population in Agnaya
go outside their barangay, to work, to buy food and even to travel. Graph for how many times
they when outside their barangay according to the range of their age.
Age Frequency
20-30 2
31-40 4
41-50 4
51-60 5
61-70 3
71-80 1
81-90 0
91-100 1
Notice that, there are no "gaps" between the bars (although some bars might be "absent"
reflecting no frequencies). This is because a histogram represents a continuous data set, and
as such, there are no gaps in the data. It represents counts of data that fall within intervals
6
Pie Chart
It is a circle divided into sectors proportional to the frequencies. It shows how a part of
something relates to the whole. It is important to define what the whole represents.
We have different ways on how we can go to our work. We ask 200 workers what
vehicle they use in travelling going to their work place. We can divide circles or pie graph
based on the given percentage.
Notice that a pie chart is like a pie that divides a whole. This means that a pie chart gives a
data equals to 100%. It shows how a part relates to a whole.
Bar Graph
It is like histogram except that its bars are separated. This uses parallel bars, either
horizontal or vertical, to represent counts for several categories. One bar is used for each
category with the length of the bar representing the count of one category.
Dr. Felipe de Jesus National High School is one of the big schools in Bulacan. Lots of
students want to enroll here every year. So we collect some informations about the number of
enrollees from 2017 to 2020.
Notice that a bar graph has a gap not like histogram. It represents counts for several categories
7
Line Graph
It shows trends in data clearly. This displays data which are collected over a period of
time to show how the data change at regular intervals
Starting October 2019 Bethina saves her extra money for the birthday of her mother
on June 2020. In June 2020 she bought a gift for her mother, and she was very happy, and
she felt the same way too. So she decided to graph and identify the month did she save more
and which month did she save less.
Month Savings
Oct 2019 35
Nov 2019 65
Dec 2019 30
Jan 2020 35
Feb 2020 45
March 2020 10
April 2020 25
May 2020 55
June 2020 80
Note that he horizontal axis is usually a time scale, for example minutes, hours, days, months
or years. It represents data over a period of time.
