“Measurements involves comparison

with a standard”

Why do I have to measure?

1. Solve measurement problems involving conversion of units,
expression of measurements in scientific notation;

2. Differentiate accuracy from precision.

 Physical quantities can be expressed in terms of a number of
fundamental quantities.

Mass Distance

 A physical quantity will only make sense if compared to a

reference standard.

Directions: Determine the number of significant figures of the
values given below:

1. 0.0025
2. 12.00030
3. 3.1416
4. 20.23
5. 0.7
A Short Recall…
Rules in Determining the Number of the Significant Figure:

1. All nonzero digits are significant.

2. All zeros between nonzero digits are significant.
3. All zeros before the first nonzero digit are not significant.
4. All zeros to the right of the last nonzero digit are significant.

Hi Newton! Today, I got drenched in
the rain while walking to school from
home since I forgot to bring my
umbrella. I cant believe it! My bag
wasn’t zipped all the way. When I got
here in school all my papers got soaked.
I cannot passed our homework. Can you
help me? I am in the lobby right now.
Thank you so much!

Scientific Notation
Scientific notation also called exponential notation is a convenient way of
writing values using the power of ten notation

Used to determine the number of significant digits as well as the

place value of the digit.

Format: C.MMMMMX
Rules in Expressing Standard Notation to Scientific Notation:

1. When the decimal point is moved from right to left,

the result is positive exponent.

2. When the decimal point is moved left to right, the result

is negative exponent.
Rules in Expressing Scientific Notation back to Standard
Notation:
1. Moved the current decimal point according to the
number of places based on the exponent.

Move to the RIGHT

Move to the LEFT

1. SI (derived from French Systeme International) units
also known as Metric system

2. English System also known as the Imperial

system, is a system of measurement commonly
used in the United States and some other
countries.
Length:
•1 inch (in) = 2.54 centimeters (cm)
•1 foot (ft) = 12 inches (in) = 30.48 centimeters (cm)
•1 yard (yd) = 3 feet (ft) = 91.44 centimeters (cm)
•1 mile (mi) = 1,760 yards (yd) = 1.609 kilometers (km)

Weight:
•1 ounce (oz) = 28.35 grams (g)
•1 pound (lb) = 16 ounces (oz) = 0.4536 kilograms (kg)
•1 ton (short ton) = 2,000 pounds (lb) = 907.2 kilograms (kg)
Volume:
•1 fluid ounce (fl oz) = 29.57 milliliters (ml)
•1 cup (c) = 8 fluid ounces (fl oz) = 236.59 milliliters (ml)
•1 pint (pt) = 2 cups (c) = 473.18 milliliters (ml)
•1 quart (qt) = 2 pints (pt) = 0.946 liters (L)
•1 gallon (gal) = 4 quarts (qt) = 3.785 liters (L)
Temperature:
•water freezes at 32°F and boils at 212°F.
• °C = (°F - 32) x 5/9.
Length/Distance:

1 meter (m) = 100 centimeters (cm) 1 meter (m) = 1000 millimeters

(mm) 1 kilometer (km) = 1000 meters (m)
1 nm = 0.000000001

Volume:
1 liter (L) = 1000 milliliters (mL) 1 liter (L) = 1 decimeter cubed (dm^3)
Mass/Weight:

1 kilogram (kg) = 1000 grams (g) 1 gram (g) = 1000 milligrams (mg)

rules in significant figures in expressing it into scientific notation.
Write your answer in a 1 whole yellow pad.
