UNDERSTAND
CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD RESEARCH PROBLEM AND
GUIDELINES/CRITERIA IN SELECTING A GOOD RESEARCH PROBLEM

What are the characteristics of

a good research problem?

A GOOD RESEARCH PROBLEM

1. should be new and have not yet been answered sufficiently
- Novelty is important in deciding a topic for research. Although this is
very challenging to the researcher, a good research problem should
provide more rooms for investigation.

2. is doable and can be replicated

- There is no point investigating a problem which is not feasible to
research. A good research problem should be possible to investigate
following the scientific method. Since research involves collecting
and studying data, replication is needed to arrive to a more reliable
data and information.
3. generates research questions
- A good research problem should generate several specific research
questions which represents various components of the problem. It
should create opportunities to investigate different parameters to
come up with a more solid conclusion.

4. has a base in the research literature

- A well-listed review of related literature and related studies is an
indicator of a solid background and well-founded study. A well stated
research problem will always relate to several different research
literatures.
5. has potential significance/importance
- A research study should not just be any topic. It should be something
which will contribute to the betterment of the community or solve issues
in the society. Studies are conducted to improve the quality of life and
create technologies beneficial to the survival of the society.

SAQ-1: What are the characteristics of a good research problem?

How do you select a good research

problem? What are the
criteria/guidelines to remember?

Research topic selected should have a potential

significance or importance not just to the researcher
but to the community. Examples of the studies
conducted which made life better and prolonged the
life span of people are the vaccines and medicines.

Timeline of the study depends on the depth of

the study. Some topics require little time to finish
while others take more to time to be able to collect
sufficient data. Like for example, studies related to
creating vaccine against viruses take several months
to years while studies related to filtering devices will
only take a month or less to derive to the desired
result. Research problem should be doable within the
given time frame.

Researchers play an important role in

the selection of research problem. The prior
knowledge and experience of a researcher is
required for him/her to be able to collect
sufficient and accurate data.

The practical significance of the

research problem should be noted when
selecting topic for investigation.

In selecting research topic/problem, a

SAQ-2: What are the criteria in selecting a good research problem?

How do you write the main problem

and sub problem of your chosen
research topic/problem?

The main problem of research includes the general objective of the

researcher in his/her study. It is written as part of the statement of the problem. It
usually starts with
“This study aims to investigate on the …………………………”
The sub problem of research comes after stating the main objective of
the research. It includes specific objectives by stating how the variables
(independent, dependent and controlled) affect each other. It will also describe
the parameters that influences the changes in the variables. Usually it starts with
“Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:”

A researcher wanted to find out if the amount of organic fertilizer

affects the vertical growth of the plants. He planned on applying different
amount of organic fertilizer (10 g, 30g and 50g) on a lettuce plant.
Main Problem:
This study aimed to investigate if the amount of organic fertilizer affects the
vertical growth of the plants.
Subproblem:
Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:
1. Is there a significant difference on the vertical height of the plants applied
with 10g, 30 g and 50 g of organic fertilizer?
2. Which of the amount of organic fertilizer (10g, 30g and 50g) resulted to a
higher vertical growth of the plants?

SAQ-3: How do you differentiate main problem and subproblem of research?

SAQ-4: How do you usually state the subproblem in research?

(Answer on the separate sheets provided.)

Read the following simple science experiments. State 1 possible main problem and 2
subproblems for each situation below.

1. Steven wanted to find out if the amount of light affects the growth of his snake
plants. He prepared three pots of same size of snake plants and placed them
at the 3 different areas. Pot 1 was placed outside the house where there is
direct exposure to light (sun). Pot 2 was place inside the house where there is
minimal amount of light present for the plant. Pot 3 was placed in a corner
where light (artificial and natural) is impossible for the plant to reach.

2. While reading a magazine, Jessica was able to cross on the concept/idea that
music affects the growth of the plants. She got curious and wanted to find out
more if what she had read is true. She used two same plants (same size) and
exposed one plant to music while the other plant was kept in a quiet place. She
records the height of the plant every 7 days.

REMEMBER

 A good research problem possesses the following characteristics:

 new and have not yet been answered sufficiently
 doable and can be replicated
 generates research questions
 has a base in the research literature
 has potential significance/importance
 In selecting research problem consider the resources availability, relative
importance, researcher’s knowledge, practicability, and timeline of the selected
problem.
 The main problem in research states the main objective of the study while the
subproblem indicates the specific objectives in which the variables are
mentioned.

Part I. Modified TRUE or FALSE.
Directions: Read the following statement thoroughly. Write TRUE if the
underlined word/s makes the statement correct. If the statement is incorrect, change
the underlined word/s to make it true. Write your answers on the space provided
before each number.
__________ 1. A well-stated research problem will relate to few different research
literatures.
__________ 2. Research problem should be doable within the given time frame.
__________ 3. The practical significance of the research problem should not be noted
