VI. Concept Notes

Let us have a review on the research process

and research topic. The conduct of an experimental
study such as capstone research project employs the
scientific method, which involves systematic
procedures to come up with scientifically acceptable
and verifiable results and conclusion. Selecting a
research topic is a critical initial step in conducting an
investigatory project. The challenge for beginning
researchers is to come up with a topic that is novel,
feasible, and applicable. A basic advice is to choose a
topic that is interesting to you.
Choose a topic that you are excited about such that you can sustain the project
from start to finish. Often, an excellent research topic deals with real world issues of
local significance. Ideas for research topics may be found in articles from different
sources like journals, newspapers, books, radio, and television; listening to lectures or
seminars; observing events in the environment; talking to your science teacher or to a
scientist in the field; or through casual conversation with others. Below is the diagram
that shows the research process.

The Research Process

2
As a rule of thumb, an acceptable research topic should neither be too broad
nor too narrow. The comparison of a broad and narrow topics is presented below to
further understand their difference:
If it is too broad: If it is too narrow:
 You will find too many articles that  Only few articles or studies are
have little significance to your topic. available to serve as your
reference.
 The information you will find is broken
to several specific aspects.  It will be difficult to create
multiple key words to describe
 Your topic will be too simple that it can your research.
be summarized into one or two words.
 The impact of your research
will be severely limited.

Broad enough to have an impact on the

society and the scientific community.

Narrow enough to make the

research project doable and
answer a specific problem.

Choose a topic that you will greatly enjoy. Below is an example of Broad
categories and specific fields of life science for your reference. To guide you, you may
formulate an inverted pyramid of your chosen study where you must have an
introduction, action taken, problems encountered/observations and purpose/objective
why you want to pursue a study.
Broad Category Specific Field
Biology (excluding environmental) is a Anatomy, bacteriology, biochemistry,
science of life in all its forms and biogeography, biometry and
phenomena, with the emphasis on biostatistics, biophysics,
origin, growth, structure, behavior, and biotechnology, botany, cell biology,
reproduction. food, nutrition, genetics, microbiology,
virology, zoology, nutrition,
pharmacology, neuroscience.

Do you want to narrow down further? Look at the sample below:

Main Category Biomedical

First Level Animal growth and development
Second Level Natural products in controlling pest or
vectors
Proposed Title Effectiveness of pandan leaf
(Pandanus amaryllifolius) extract as a
cockroach repellant.

VII. Performance Task

1. You must already have a grouping and a leader.

2. This is still an individual performance output but keep a copy so that when
you will have a collaboration with your groupmates you may just enhance
your outputs for collation.

3. Ensure that you have the same topic with your groupmates so that you can
use this performance tasks for the final paper that you will work on.

4. Identify a research problem/topic within your community for your capstone

project.

5. Think of at least three possible scientific investigatory project title for your
chosen topic.

6. Try formulating at least three research question/ statement of the problem.

(You may refer to the sample that your teacher will provide in your group
chat).

7. The leader of the group must contact your teacher for approval of a chosen
research title.

8. Write an essay based on your inverted pyramid of ideas. (Use third person
here so that you may utilized this in your final paper).

9. You may start finding related literature and studies as you go through to get
more ideas about your research capstone project.

10. Continue brainstorming with your groupmates.

11. Enjoy and be positive!

12. The class secretary shall submit via FB messenger the approved research
titles, name of students per group indicating the leader first followed by
members.
