AND
DISADVANTAGES
POINTS TO BE DISCUSSED

• INTRODUCTION
• ADVANTAGES
• ACADEMIC
• SOCIOCULTURAL
• MISCELENOUS BENEFITS
• BML: A CURSE OR BLESSING
• CONCLUSION
INTRODUCTION

• It is stated in some circles that linguistic diversity

evidenced by multilingualism is a curse because of the
challenges involved in building a pluralistic nation in the
face of linguistic and cultural diversity.
• However, there is enough evidence that, globally,
multilingualism is the norm and monolingualism, the
exception.
• Therefore, the advantages of BML need to be identified,
exploited, and used for individual growth and national
development.
ADVANTAGES
• Bilinguals have greater potential for creativity and
flexible thinking, when compared with monolinguals.
• They are endowed with cognitive benefits as a result of
their capacity to use and process two or more linguistic
codes.
• Studies reveal that bilinguals tend to be better in
problem-solving.
• It is reported that knowing more than one language may
help the brain sharpen its ability to focus.
ADVANTAGES (CONT)
• Multilingualism is reported to help nurturing interpersonal
communication awareness and skills.
• Other studies have revealed that there is a significant
delay of the symptoms of old age in bilinguals, which on
the other, hand manifests faster in monolinguals
• According to a study conducted by US National Aphasia
Association, acute or chronic condition of Aphasia can
be better treated in bilinguals than monolinguals
• They have a stereoscopic vision of the world from two or
more perspectives.
BENEFITS OF BML TO
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
• Having better critical thinking, they have the potentials to
attain high academic standards with less effort
• Bilinguals have more opportunities to transfer knowledge and
language governing rules from one language to the other (you
just need to label the concept if it exists in both languages).
• Have a competitive advantage over monolinguals from their
knowledge of foreign languages and other cultures (when you
know a language you know that culture) .
SOCIOCULTURAL
BENEFITS
• Bi/multilinguals have the socio-cultural advantage to
appreciate and accommodate any foreign culture easier
than monolinguals.
• On the other hand, the lack of language skills limits
researchers in their ability to engage internationally in or
with their research, and in their career opportunities.
MISCELENOUS BENIFITS
• If a society is multilingual, the urgent information on health-
threatening issues could easily reach out to all the villages and
suburbs of the nation.
• Revitalization and maintenance of endangered languages
BML: A CURSE OR A BLESSING
• BML is sometimes considered as a problem or a major
challenge to individual and/or societal development.
• It is argued that the only advantage recognized for BML
individual is the ability to use two or more languages
• Adepts of the ideology of monolingual habitus (one
nation, one language) have tended to consider BML,
multiculturism and linguistic diversity as a curse and an
obstacle to nation building
BML: A CURSE OR A BLESSING

• The treatment of different minority ethnic

groups in (Aniti cow slaughter law and anti
conversion law in India’s )
• Civic equity and job opportunities of minority
groups
• BML in language planning and policy
(One or more official language, Pak, S. A and

Aus)
Conclusion
• BML provides an enormous number of
advantages and opportunities at both individual
and societal levels.
• These advantages considerably outnumber its
disadvantages.
• Therefore, BML is necessary for maintenance of
linguistic diversity and revitalization of
endangered languages all over the world.
