CONCEPT OF NUMBERS TO 999 999

PLACE VALUE AND VALUE

PLACE VALUE – it refers to the value of


the column in which the number is.
VALUE – it refers to the worth of each
digit depending on where it lies in the
number.
In the chart above, the number 154 827 read as “one
hundred fifty-four thousand, eight hundred twenty-seven”
is grouped into periods of at most three digits per period.
The units period contains 827, while the thousands period
contains 154.

ROUNDING OFF NUMBERS
In rounding numbers, there are three steps to follow:

STEP 1: Identify the given digit to be round off.

STEP 2: Look at the digit at the right of it.

STEP 3: a. If the digit in the right is 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9, add


one to the rounding digit and change all digits at the
right of the “rounding digit” to zero.
              b. If the digit is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4, do not change
the rounding digit but change all digits at the right of
the “rounding digit” to zero.
EXAMPLE 1:
Round off 35 912 to the nearest hundreds.

EXAMPLE 2:
Round off 56 872 to the nearest thousands.
