STORAGE DEVICE
A storage device is any type of computing

hardware that is used for storing, porting or

extracting data files and objects. Storage devices

can hold and store information both temporarily

and permanently. They may be internal or

external to a computer, server or computing

device.

HISTORY OF STORAGE DEVICE

Early storage devices were primitive mechanical systems
based on items like punch cards and later, magnetic tape.
They presented binary through physical media.

These became largely obsolete when other digital media

was created. First, there were floppy disks and diskettes,
then there were compact discs that could hold large
amounts of binary in digital formats.

TWO TYPES OF STORAGE DEVICE

PRIMARY STORAGE DEVICE
• Generally smaller in size, primary storage devices are designed to
hold data temporarily and are internal to the computer. They have
the fastest data access speed. These types of devices include RAM
and cache memory.

SECONDARY STORAGE DEVICE

• Secondary storage devices usually have larger storage capacity, and they
store data permanently. They can be either internal or external to the
computer. These types of devices include the hard disk, the optical disk
drive and USB storage device.

EXAMPLES OF STORAGE DEVICES

HARD DISK DRIVE (HHD)
• Is a non-volatile data storage device.
• Non-volatile refers to storage devices that maintain stored data when
turned off.

SOLID STATE DRIVE (SSD)

• Is a new generation of storage device used in computers.
• SSDs store data using flash-based memory, which is much faster
than the traditional hard disks they've come to replace.

EXAMPLES OF STORAGE DEVICES

FLASH DRIVE
• A data storage device that uses flash memory specifically
• A small rectangular device that is designed to be plugged directly
into a USB port on a computer and is often used for transferring files
from one computer to another.

EXAMPLES OF STORAGE DEVICES

FLOPPY DISK
• Is an obsolete type of disk storage composed of a thin and flexible
disk of a magnetic storage medium in a square or nearly square
plastic enclosure lined with a fabric that removes dust particles from
the spinning disk.
• Floppy disks store digital data which can be read and written when
the disk is inserted into a floppy disk drive (FDD) connected to or
inside a computer or other device.

EXAMPLES OF STORAGE DEVICES

MAGNETIC TAPE
• A type of physical storage media for different kinds of data.
• Magnetic tape has been a major vehicle for audio and binary data
storage for several decades.

COMPACT DISC
• A portable storage medium that can be used to record, store and play
back audio, video and other data in digital form.

EXAMPLES OF STORAGE DEVICES

RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY (RAM)
• a computer's short-term memory, where the data that the processor is
currently using is stored.
• Your computer can access RAM memory much faster than data on a
hard disk, SSD, or other long-term storage device, which is why
RAM capacity is critical
• for system performance.
