INTRODUCTION

• After the introduction of first generation mobile network in early 80’s,wireless

communication has gone through evolution. From 1G to today’s 5G ,the communication
has become smarter, faster, user friendly. We are going to discuss the history, features and
limitations of 1G,2G and 3G.
1G(FIRST GENERATION MOBILE
COMMUNICATION SYSTEM)
• The first commercial cellular network was launched in Japan by Nippon Telegraph and
Telephone (NTT) in 1979, initially in the metropolitan area of Tokyo.
• The first phone that used this network was called TZ-801 built by Panasonic.
• In the beginning of 1980s,  it gained popularity worldwide in Sweden, Norway, Denmark,
the UK, the USA, Finland, Austria, Canada, South Korea, Europe, etc.
• In the early to mid 1990s, 1G was superseded by newer 2G (second generation)
cellular technologies such as GSM and cdmaOne.
FEATURES OF 1G

 Analog technology.
 Maximum speed 2.4kbps.
 Frequency 800 MHz and 900 MHz.
 Bandwidth: 10 MHz (666 duplex channels with bandwidth of 30 KHz).
 Modulation: Frequency Modulation (FM).
 Mode of service: voice only.
 Access technique: Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA).
LIMITATIONS:

 Poor voice quality due to interference.

 Poor battery life.
 Large sized mobile phones (not convenient to carry).
 Less security (calls could be decoded using an FM demodulator).
 Limited number of users and cell coverage.
 Roaming was not possible between similar systems.
2G – SECOND GENERATION COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

• 2G was commercially launched on the GSM standard in Finland by Radiolinja

(now part of Elisa Oyj) in 1991.
• It’s a digital network, and providing a reliable & secure communication channel
was the 2G network’s primary motive.
FEATURES:

 Digital technology.
 Small data services like SMS and MMS (Multimedia Message System) is possible
 Roaming was possible.
 First internet system with poor data rate.
 Better voice call.
 Conference calls are allowed.
 Comparatively enhanced security.
 Data speed up to 64 Kbps.
 30 to 200 kHz bandwidth.
LIMITATIONS:

 Restricted mobility.
 Data rate low.
 Fewer features.
 Less hardware capability.
 User numbers are limited.
3G SYSTEM

• 3G was commercially introduced in 2001 and first used in Europe, Japan, and
China.
• It is the best popular wireless technology developed by UMTS, which means
Universal Mobile Telecommunications System.
• To facilitate better voice calls and data systems were the main target of the 3G
network.
• After the introduction of 3G mobile communication system, smart phones
became popular across the globe.
FEATURES:

High data rates with low cost.

Email.
Web browsing.
Video downloading.
Picture sharing.
Better voice call.
15 to 20 MHz bandwidth.
Speed 2 Mbps.
FEATURES:

 Much better security system than 1G & 2G

 Support mobile app.
 TV streaming.
 3D quality was high.
 Support multimedia messages.
 Location tracking.
 Map location.
LIMITATIONS:

 Spectrum licenses are expensive.

 Mobile devices were costly.
 To support a higher data rate requires higher bandwidth.
 Costly infrastructure, equipment and implementation.
