Paint

What is paint???
Paint is any liquid, liquefiable, or mastic
composition that, after application to a
substrate in a thin layer, converts to a solid
film.
Why paint?
It is most commonly used to protect,
colour, or provide texture to object.
Its used to protect

Its used to beautify

Components of paint
Binder (or film former): The binder is the
film former components of the paint. It is the
only component that must be present if the
binder material is suitable for application.
The binder imparts properties such as gloss,
durability, flexibility, and toughness

Diluent or solvent: The main purpose of the

diluent is to dissolve the polymer and adjust
Pigment and filter: Pigments are granular solid
incorporates in plant to contribute colour.
Filters are granular solids incorporates in
impart toughness, texture ,give the paint
special properties, or to reduce the cost of the
paint. Some paints contain dye instead of or in
combination with paint.

Additive: Besides the main categories of

ingredients, paint can have a wide variety of
Application
Solid : It is usually used in industrial
application. The paint is applied as a very fine
powder then baked at high temperature. This
melts the powder and makes it adhere to the
surface . This is called powder coating.

Liquid: Rollers, brushes and blades are used.

Gas; the paint is suspended in solid or liquid

Types of Paint…
Latex Paint: Latex paint can be used for
exterior or interior use depending upon
product. It can be painted over oil based
paint. It can be stored for at least two years
without the risk of deterioration, but
exposure to extreme heat or cold may
shorten the paints storage span.
Oil Paint: It thins with solvent such as
mineral spirit, dries slower than latex paint
and waiting overnight to re-coat is
Enamel Paint; Its basically a varnish paint with
pigment added. It produces an easy-to-clean surface. It
can be used for interior and exterior but for the highest
interior work an undercoat is required.
Shellac
Long lasting and good for finishing wood floors,
trims ,and furniture. dries dust free in 15-20 mins.
Instead of re-staining, pigmented shellac can be used as
a sealant over stained finishes for a uniform, freshly
painted surface.
Sheen Finishes…
Eggshell; Slightly higher than “dead” flat. Is
usually an enamel paint. Most often used on
interior and exterior walls on doors and trim.
Lo-lustre; Low sheen or ‘satin’. Slightly higher
than eggshell but lower than full semi-gloss. Most
often used in kitchens, baths
Semi-gloss; Midway between flat and high gloss.
Associated with enamel paint and most often used
in kitchens, interior doors and trim
Gloss; very shiny appearance. Enamel paints. Used
on interior surfaces. Popular for furniture, toys,

Maintenance & Remedies…
Cracks and Peels: Latex paint doesn’t always bond
well to chalked surfaces and therefore holds rain and
dew leasing to cracks. When repainting chalky
surfaces, it is advisable to remove the chalk by
sanding or scrubbing.
Stains: Natural stains are easy to renew, therefore
when repainting, any excess of stain or oil should be
wiped off, so that formation of a surface coat is
prevented.
In general to prevent ruin of paint, the weather
Advantages of Paint
1. For aesthetic purposes
2. Prevention of rusting
3. It covers cracks
4. For smoothening of surfaces
Disadvantages of paint
1. It is not durable
2. It has high cost of maintainance
3. It causes pollution
4. Waste is generated during application due
Conclusion
Technology of Paint
Paint industry makes a widen range of products, paints (water
based or solvent), varnishes, lacquers and enamels. These
products show a classification as a function of their use,
industrial (mining, heavy industry, naval construction, industry
in general) or decorative (architectural, domestic use). Paints’
development of better applications and better properties,
strength and hardness, promotes a continuous development in
this sector.
