2.1 Divergence/ Divergent Evolution -
is the divergence of traits in organisms
descending from a common ancestor. As
a result of divergent evolution, new
genera emerge and it is the main reason
for the great diversity of species in
nature (brown bear, polar bear, panda).
2.2Parallelism/Parallel
Evolution -
is the independent
occurrence of similar traits
in several genetically related
groups. It is a result of the
one-way action of natural
selection and is a
consequence of the
adaptation for living in the
same environment. Parallel
evolution leads to the
emergence of new
families in a given order
(sea lion, walrus, seal).
2.3 Convergence/Convergent Evolution
Lesson Review

• Microevolution follows the

settlement of planet Earth with
life. It is identified with the
evolution of the biosphere.
• According to Darwin and
according to the modern
evolutionary theory, higher ranks
systematic groups are formed by
divergence from a common
ancestor.
• Parallelism and convergence
enhance biodiversity.
Compare parallelism and
convergence by writing down the
sentences
• Parallelism and convergence are similar in that
………………………………………………………………………………..
• The reason for the similarity is
…………………………………………………………….....................
• Parallelism and convergence differ in that
……………………………………………………………………………....
• Which way of speciation has the greatest
significance for the evolution and why?
…………………………………………………………………………….…
