The neutral tone
The neutral tone(qīng shēng) is pronounced
lightly and briefly without any stress, and is
indicated in pinyin by the absence of any tone mark
above the syllable.
For example, 爸 爸 (bàba), 妈 妈 (māma), 哥 哥
(gēge), 姐姐 (jiějie), 弟弟 (dìdi), 妹妹 (mèimei)
Spelling rules
1) When “i”, “u”, “ü” makes a syllable by itself, “y”
is added in front of “i” and “ü”, and “w” is added in
front of “u”.
i→yi ü→yu u→wu

2) When “i” starts a syllable, it is written as “y”,

expect in “in” and “ing”, where “y” is added at the
beginning. For example,
iɑ→yɑ iɑn→yɑn iɑng→yɑng
iɑo→yɑo iou→you iong→yong
ie→ye in→yin ing→ying
Spelling rules
3) When “u” starts a syllable, it is written as “w”.
ua→wa uai→wai uei→wei uan→wan
uang→wang uen→wen uo→wo

4) When “ü” starts a syllable, “y” is added in front of

it and “ü” is written as “u”.
üe→yue ün→yun üɑn→yuɑn
Spelling rules

5) When “ü” or a final beginning with “ü” spells with “j”,

“q”, “x”, “ü” is written as “u” , like in
“ju 、 qu 、 xu 、 jue 、 que 、 xue 、 juan 、 quan 、 xuan 、
jun 、 qun 、 xun.”

When spelling with “n” or “l”, “ü”does not chang. For

example, nü 、 lü 、 lüe 、 nüe.
Spelling rules
6) “iou”, “uei”, “uen” are written as “iu”, “ui” and
“un” after initials, as in the examples “niu” ,“ gui”and “
lun”.

7) When a syllable beginning with “ɑ”, “o” or “e”

comes after another syllable and causes ambiguity,
the dividing mark “’” will be used to distinguish the
syllables. “dì’èr”, “xī’ān”, “pí’ǎo”.

Sum up: Finals (36)
ɑ o e i u ü er

uɑ uo uɑi uei (ui)
uɑn uen (un) uɑng ueng
iɑ ie iɑo iou (iu)
iɑn iɑng iong

Tone mark

The tone mark is written above the main vowel of

a syllable. The main vowels are listed in order of
precedence as follows: ɑ, o, e, i, u, ü. The exception
is in the causes of “iu” and “ui” where the tone
mark is written above the latter vowel.
da men duo dao lei xue shui niu hui
dà mén duó dào lèi xué shuí niú huì
Third-tone sandhi
When a third-tone is followed by
another third-tone syllable, the
third tone in the first syllable is
pronounced as the second tone.
The sandhi of “ 不”
不 ( bù ) is a fourth-tone syllable by itself. The
tone doesn’t change when 不( bù ) is followed by
a first-tone, second-tone or third-tone syllable, but it
becomes the second tone when is followed by a
fourth-tone syllable. For example:
吃 chī bù chī
来 lái bù lái
不 bù 好 hǎo bù hǎo
是 shì bú shì
The sandhi of “ 一”
“ 一 ” is a polyphonic character. When it is the first-tone
syllable, it means No.1.
When it is read as fourth-tone syllable, the tone doesn’t change
when 一( yì ) is followed by a first-tone, second-tone or third-
tone syllable, but it becomes the second tone when is followed
by a fourth-tone syllable. For example:

些 xiē yì xiē
直 zhí yì zhí
一 yì 起 qǐ yì qǐ
部 bù yí bù
