I. Counting numbers
II. Age
III. Basic strokes in writing Chinese Characters

Learning Outcomes  Count in mandarin.

 Write basic Chinese characters.
 Ask and tell age in Mandarin.
 Ask and tell someone’s contact information

LEARNING CONTENT

Counting from 1 to 10 can also be a good way of starting to learn how to speak and write
Mandarin. Since larger Chinese numbers are formed simply by combining the words for the two
digits, if you can count to 10, you can actually count all the way to 99.

2
The figure below will help you recite and write numbers in Mandarin

0 Líng 零
1 Yī 一
2 Èr 二
3 Sān 三
4 Sì 四
5 Wǔ 五
6 Liù 六
7 Qī 七
8 Bā 八
9 Jiǔ 九
10 Shí 十

Vocabulary

电话 diàn huà n. phone

号码 hàomǎ n. number

多少 duōshǎo pron. how many or how much

In China when dealing with contact numbers use yāo for 1 instead of yī.

百 bǎi 100
千 qiān 1,000
万 wàn 10,000
百万 bǎiwàn 1 million
亿 yì 100 million
十亿 shíyì 1 billion
兆 zhào 1 trillion

3
两 (liǎng) is used for two when counting people and things. It can be also used as the first digit
in two hundred (两百), two thousand (两千), etc, however only for the first digit - 222 people = 两百二
十二人 or 二百二十二人

Ordinal numbers are formed by adding 第 dì ("sequence") before the number: 第一 (dì yī) =
1st, 第二 (dì èr) = 2nd, etc.

Large numbers are divided into units of ten thousand, so 1 million is 100 wàn (100 ten-
thousands), and a billion is 10 yì (10 hundred-millions).

Asking for a Person’s Age

Nǐ jǐ suì?
Jǐ 几 how many
Suì 岁 years old

Always remember that jǐ is used to ask numbers from 0 to 9.

Here is another way of asking the age of a person.

Nǐ jīnnián duōdà ?
jīnnián 今年 this year
duō dà 多大 how old
Suì 岁 year (of
age)

Applying in a conversation:
Nǐ jǐ suì? 你几岁?

How old are you

Wǒ sān suì. 我 3 岁。

I am three years
old.

Nǐ jīnnián duō dà ? 你今年多大?

How old are you this

year?
Wǒ jīnnián sānshí
suì.

4
I am thirty years old. 我 30 岁。

Basic Strokes of Chinese Writing

Chinese writing, which shows the richness and essence of Chinese civilization, has a rich and long
history. Indeed, this is the true carrier of the Chinese culture. The current Chinese characters have changed a
lot from its original and complex form to the current simplified form, thus making it much easier to recognize.
5
6
Stroke Order of Chinese Writing
Stroke Order means: which stroke is written first and which one comes after that. To really write
Chinese word in the right way, we need to accumulate day by day in learning Chinese writing. Modern Chinese
characters have their roots in calligraphy, so stroke order is vital in writing Chinese.
