Detailed Lesson Plan

in
Mathematics -9

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
A. define Pythagorean theorem;
B. solve problems involving Pythagorean theorem in real life situation
; and
C. apply Pythagorean in real life situation.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
A. Topic: Application of Pythagorean Theorem
B. References: Mathematics Learners Material Grade 9
C. Materials: Visual Aids.
III. PROCEDURE
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. Motivation Yes ma’am.

Last meeting we discuss Pythagorean

Theorem right?
Pythagorean Theorem states that the sum of
the square of the two legs is equal to the
square of the hypotenuse, ma’am.
Very good. So who can state the Pythagorean
Theorem?
Ma’am quartiles divide a distribution into
four equal parts.

Very Good.
Let’s have a review.

So today we discuss about decile class.

1. c 2=a2+ b2
(15)2=( x)2 +(12)2
225=x2 +144
x 2=225−144
x 2=81
√ x 2=√ 81
x=9

B. Presentation
So today, let’s discuss more about
Pythagorean theorem dealing with real life
situation and this is what we call the
“Application of Pythagorean theorem.
C. Discussion STEPS TO SOLVE PROBLEMS:
Before we are going to solve some problems, 1. Read and understand the problem carefully.
there are steps or tips we should follow in 2. Illustrate the problems,
order to solve the problems easier 3create an equation,
. Solve for the unknown.
5. Verify your answer and don’t forget to put
the corresponding unit.

Let’s have an example

1. Kristine rides his bicycle 8 km west then 15
km north. How far is he from his starting
point?

n=15 km g=?

w= 8 km

c 2=a2+ b2
( g)2=( n)2+(w)2
( g)2=( 15)2 +( 8)2
( g)2=2252 +64
g2=289
√ g2=√ 289
g=17 km

So therefore 17 km is his starting point.

2. A car drives 10 miles due east and then 12

mile due south. How far is the starting point?
a=10 miles

c=? b=12 miles

c 2=a2+ b2
(c )2=(a)2+(b)2
(c )2=(10)2 +(12)2
(c )2=1002 +144
c 2=244
√ c 2=√ 244
c=2 √ 61 miles

3. A ladder leans against a second story

window of a house. If the ladder is 25 m long
and the base of the ladder is 20m from the
base of the house, how high is the window?

h=?
l= 25m

b=20
l 2=b 2+ h2
(25)2=(20)2 +(h)2
(625)=(400)+( h)2
625−400=¿
√ h2= √225
h=15 meter

Did you understand class?

Yes ma’am.
Any question class?
None ma’am.

D. Generalization
What is Pythagorean Theorem again class?

Pythagorean Theorem states that the sum of

the square of the two legs is equal to the
square of the hypotenuse, sir
Very good.
And what are the five steps to solve problem
easier?
STEPS TO SOLVE PROBLEMS:
1. Read and understand the problem carefully.
2. Illustrate the problems,
3create an equation,
. Solve for the unknown.
5. Verify your answer and don’t forget to put
the corresponding unit.

E. Application
At this juncture, we’re going to have a
group work class. You will be grouped into 4.
The only thing you can do is to answer the 3
questions that will be given to each group and
write your complete solutions and illustrate
the problem in a manila paper which will be
provided afterwards. You only have 5 minutes m=24ft t=?
to finish the activity. answer:25 feet

1. How long is the wire from the top of a 24 p= 7f

foot pole to a point on the ground 7 feet from
the foot of the pole?

c
2. A suitcase measure 24 inches long and 7 7inch c answer :25
inches wide. How long is the diagonal of the inches
suitcase?

3. Mr. Enrique saw an advertisement of a T.V

in the newspaper where is it mentioned that Z
the T.V is 16 inches high and 14 inches wide. x=16 inches
=
Calculate the diagonal length of its screen for
Mr. Enrique?
y=14 inches
4. Ms. Julia Gil rides her car 9 miles due
south then 12 miles due east. How far is Mr.
Julia Gil from its starting point?

c=? a=9 miles

answer:15 miles
j=12 miles

IV.EVALUATION
Directions: Solve the following on your paper with illustration
1. John Lester walked 15 meters from his house due north then 8 meters due east. How far to
the nearest meter is John Lester from where he started?
2. If an android phone measures √ 30∈¿ diagonally and its width is3 √ 2∈¿ . Then, what is the
length of the phone?
3. A painter is on the top of a 30ft.ladder that is leaning against a house. The base of the ladder
is 18ft from the base of the house. If the painter were to fall, how far would his fall be?
4. The diagonal length of the backboard is 19 meter and the high is 8 meter, find the base of the
backboard?
5.The picture frame measure 6 inches long and 5 inches wide. How long is the diagonal length of
the picture?

V. ASSIGNMENT
Directions: Solve the following.
1. The distance of two building is 12m. One building is 41m tall and the other building is 32m
tall. What was the distance of the tops of the building?
2. Mary wants to get a computer monitor for her desk which can hold a 22 inch monitor. She has
found a monitor 16 inches wide and 10 inches high. Will the computer fit into Mary’s cabin? Yes
or No? Why?
