Detailed Lesson Plan

in
Mathematics 9

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
A. define Pythagorean theorem ;
B. solve the unknown sides of a right triangle using the Pythagorean
Theorem; and
C. relate the importance of the Pythagorean theorem in solving real life
problems.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
A. Topic: Pythagorean Theorem
B. References: Mathematics Learner’s Material, pages, 389-393
C. Materials: Visual Aids, Cut out figure.
III. PROCEDURE
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. Motivation
Class, I’m going to group you into 4
and each group should have one
representative. I will give you an envelope.
Read and follow the instructions written at
the back of the enveloped. I’ll only give you
5 minutes to do the activity. The first group
who can finish will get 5 points.

Read Carefully:
1. Arrange the cut out figures inside tis Yes ma’am.
envelope to form a triangle then paste “it on
the board”. (The students will do the activity)
2. Get the area of each square given the
corresponding sides.
3. Add the area of the two smaller squares.
5
4. When you are done, clap 3 times and
say “done” 3

B. Presentation
Based on your activity class, what did
you observe when you add the area of the
two smaller squares?

It’s equal to the area of the largest square

ma’am.
Very good.so we set the name “a” “b” “c”.
how can we write the statement that the sum
of the area of the two smaller squares is
equal to the area of the largest square?

Exactly. and that concept is what we call the

“Pythagorean Theorem” a2 +b2 =c2

Who was the proponent of “Pythagorean

Theorem”

Very good. Pythagoras ma’am.

C. Discussion
So our topic for today is all about
Pythagorean theorem. Class what is
Pythagorean theorem?

Pythagorean Theorem states that the sum of

the square of the two legs is equal to the
square of the hypotenuse ma’am.
Very good! From your activity what
kind of triangle did you form?

Right triangle ma’am.

And how do we define right triangles

class?

These are triangles that has one right angle

or90 °, ma’am.
What are the parts of a right triangle
class?

Hypotenuse and the legs ma’am.

Very good.
A
c b

B a C ___
AC hypotenuse
From this figure, will you identify/name the ___ and ___
part of a right triangle class?
AB BC legs

Very good.

Exactly! Do you think only right

triangle will be used or applicable in a
Pythagorean Theorem class? Yes ma’am.

Very good. If c is the hypotenuse and a

and b are the legs in right triangle, how can
we state

Very good. And that is our formula in

Pythagorean theorem a2 + b2 =c2

Exactly! For example.

1.

c=?
b=8

a2 + b2 =c2 √ 100=√ c 2
a=6
62 + 82 =c2 10 =cc
2. Y x Z
36 + 64 =c2 c =10
100 =c2

z= 13 y= 12
X x 2+ z2 = y 2
( x)2 +(13)2 =(12)2
x 2+ 132=122
x 2+ 169=144
169-144 =x2
3.
√ 25= √ x 2
x =5

c 2=a2+ b2
2
(3 √ 5) =(6)2 +( x )2

45=36+ x 2
x 2=45−36
x 2=9

√ x 2= √ 9
Did you understand class? Is there any x=3
question?

None ma’am.

D. Generalization
To further generalize our lesson today.
How do we define Pythagorean Theorem
again, class?

It states that the sum of the square of

the two legs is equal to the square of the
hypotenuse, sir
And what is the formula for
Pythagorean Theorem?
c 2=a2+ b2
E. Application
At this juncture, we’re going to have a
group work class. You will be grouped into
4. The only thing you can do is to answer
the 3 questions that will be given to each
group and write your complete solutions and
illustrate the problem in a manila paper
which will be provided afterwards. You
only have 5 minutes to finish the activity.

1. b=9
C=11
a=?
a=2√ 10
2.

a=12 c=?

c=4√ 10

b=4

3. r=? s=9

r=√ 19

t=10

e=2
d=33
4.
d=?
f=7

u=2√ 113

t=16
5.

u=? q=14
IV. EVALUATION
DIRECTIONS: Solve the following in 5 minutes.
Right Shorter Longer Hypotenus solution
triangle leg(m) leg (o) e
A 3 ? 5
B 5 12 ?
m n C ? 24 25
D 8 15 ?
O E 9 ? 41

V. ASSIGNMENT
A. Follow Up
1. The distance of the two building is 12 m. one building is 41 m tall and the
other building is 32 m tall. What was the distance of the tops of the two building?
Include an illustration on your solution.
