The Research Design and

Methodology
Research Design

 Refersto the action plan and research procedures

developed by the investigator in order to successfully
answer the research problem
 The researcher must consider the research questions
and objectives of the study, the geographical location
and distribution of the population under study and
other factors like the personal experiences, time and
financial resources of the investigator
Role of a Research Design

 1. Identifies and states the purpose or objective of the study being

conducted
 2. Identifies the nature of the investigation
 3. Discusses the extent of the investigator’s interference with the
study
 4. Explains the setting of the research
 5. Explains the unit of analysis or the population to be observed,
measured, studied, and analyzed in the research
 6. Specifies the time dimension of the study
 7. Discusses clearly the data collection method or research
methodology to be used in the study
 8. Explains the sampling design
QUALITATIVE RESEARCH METHOD QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH METHOD
• Explores and understands a topic or problem through a • Captures and discovers meaning by the time the
research process that involves questions and investigator is immersed with the data collected
procedures, data collection, data analysis and data
interpretation

• Includes field research, case study and historical • Tests objective theories through the examination of the
research relationship among variables which can be measured
through the use of research instruments like statistical
procedures

• Do not focus on a sample’s representativeness or on • Investigators get a representative sample or a small

detailed techniques but emphasizes how the collection of units or cases from a larger population so
representative case or unit illustrates the key he or she can study the smaller group and infer
characteristics of social life generalizations about the larger group
QUALITATIVE RESEARCH METHOD QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
METHOD
• Uses nonprobability sampling or random • Uses computers to analyze the data
sampling
• The researcher reorganizes the data into a
• Develops explanations about the social format that can easily be analyzed by
world based from concrete data or computers which is called data coding
evidences and specific contexts
• Use general ideas, themes, or concepts to
propose generalizations or conclusions
