New Media

Group 4
Introduction

The traditional forms of media with which we

have become so accustomed are the press,
television, radio, cinema, and telephone. But in,
addition to these modes of communications,
there are newer form of communication that
has gained popularity. The new mode of
communication is known as “New Media.”
What is New Media?
• New media are media that can be produced and
distributed digitally by anyone with an internet
connection and generally involve two-way
communication.

• New media are forms of media that are

computational and rely on computers and the
Internet for redistribution. Some examples of new
media are computer animations, video games,
human-computer interfaces, interactive computer
installations, websites, and virtual worlds.
• New media doesn’t necessarily refer to a specific
mode of communication. Some types of new media,
such as an online newspaper, are also “old media” in
the form of a traditional printed newspaper. Other
new media are entirely new, such as a podcast or
smartphone app. It becomes even more complicated
to define when you consider that as technology
continues to advance, the definition continually
changes.
• New media are often contrasted to "old media",
such as television, radio, and print media, although
scholars in communication and media studies have
criticized inflexible distinctions based on oldness and
novelty. New media does not include analog
broadcast television programs, feature films,
magazines, or books – unless they contain
technologies that enable digital generative or
interactive processes.
Examples of New Media
The New Media Institute defines new media as “a catchall term
used to define all that is related to the internet and the interplay
between technology, images and sound.” That's in contrast to “old
media,” which PCMag defines as all forms of communication that
came before digital technology, including “radio and TV and printed
materials such as books and magazines.

• Blogs
• Email
• Music and television streaming services
• Social media networks
• Virtual and augmented reality
More samples of New Media

• Website
- One of the most common examples of new media technologies, a website can help a business
connect with costumers by allowing them to learn more about the business, make an order or browse
products.

• YouTube Series
- There’s a reason this platform is so popular. YouTube allows creatives and businesses alike to
produce and publish content geared toward a targeted interest while also inviting feedback from a
larger community.

• An online video game

- When players connect online to slay dragons or fight aliens, they are in fact interacting with
new media. These games connect people in sometime globe-spanning ways while encouraging them
to interact, collaborate and communicate.
Advantages and Disadvantages
of New Media
Advantages
The first advantage is that social media offers opportunities for
professional online networking, and it is a valuable business tool.
LinkedIn for instance, it is a tool that allows users to put an online
resume and their CVs on their profile so that they stay connected
with business people and get job offers by only looking through
their profile.
Moreover, instead of going through your business cards and
remembering each person, you can easily look up their names and
check their profile.
Furthermore, new media is accessible anytime and
anywhere. It is considered as a news tool, you can
check the news as soon as it happens and not have to
wait for the morning newspaper every day. Twitter,
Facebook, and online news serve in publishing the
news in the same minute or even the same second.
You can also spread news that happened around you
and share it with friends and other users, while in
newspaper or TV you cannot do so.
Disadvantages
On the other hand, new media is not always a
reliable source to get news from, because everyone
can be posting wrong news just for fun and grabbing
attention. There is no publisher to check whether the
information written is wrong or right unlike
newspaper, TV, or radio there is always an editor and
publisher that insures that information published to
the audience is right.
Moreover, it has hacked our lives and privacy.
For example, now a days through the social
media you can know details about a person just
by entering their account in any application.
Seeing pictures where he/she has went, what
have they done, and etc. You can't anymore have
privacy like before and have your own life, you
always feel like you to share it with others.
How to deal with the
disadvantages of New Media
Socializing is a vital part of our lives — it helps us
feel more connected and create community. When
we’re apart, using social media makes it easier to
stay in touch and maintain those connections. It has
other benefits, too, such as allowing us to practice
social skills in a low-stakes environment, find new
friends through shared interests, and preserve
memories. But we all know that social media isn’t
without its downsides.
Many of us can relate to losing track of
time or feeling unmotivated after a mindless
scroll. And it’s easy to feel lonely when we’re
only communicating virtually, or worse, we
might feel a sense of low self-worth in
comparison to the pictures of perfection we
see online — whether they represent reality
or not.
Use new media in a better way

• Spend less time on social platforms

- One study found that reducing social media use to a maximum of a
half hour a day led to a decrease in feelings of anxiety, depression, and
loneliness.

• Don’t scroll first thing in the morning or before bed

- While many of us use wake-up alarms on our devices (making it all
too easy to reach for our phones in bed), a constant stream of news,
updates, and selfies doesn’t typically set the best conditions for winding
down or gearing up to start the day.
Establish a healthier relationship with
social media, understanding the impact it
has on conditions like loneliness or anxiety is
key. With this knowledge, we can learn how
to take a mindful approach to social media
use, gaining greater control over our digital
behaviors and feeling less controlled by
them in our real lives.
Importance of New
Media
Social Media plays a very important role in
today's life, Social Media are web-based online
tools that enabled people to discover and learn
new information, share ideas, interact with new
people and organizations. It has changed the
way people live their life today, it has made
communication much easier.
The rise of new media has increased
communication between people all over the
world and the Internet. It has allowed people to
express themselves through blogs, websites,
videos, pictures, and other user-generated
media. New Media are forms of media that are
computational and rely on computers for
redistribution.
New Media
- Conclusion -
To sum up, it is possible to note that the distinction
between old and new media can be based on several
features. The most relevant distinction is based on the
structural component and popularity. Thus, new media
are characterized by computing and connectedness
while old media do not possess these features.
However, it is also necessary to note that even this
distinction is becoming somewhat blurred due to the
changes taking place in the society of the twenty-first
century.
