Polynomial Function

Polynomial function is an expression of the form

where exponents are nonnegative integer and are real numbers.

Examples: ,
4x
Application of Functions
Application of Rational Function
Example 1
The local barangay received a budget of Php. 1,000,000.00 to provide “ayuda” to each
family member in the Barangay. The amount is to be allotted equally among all the
families in the barangay. Write an equation representing the allotted amount per
family.
Fill up the table below with the different allotment amounts for the different values
for the number of families.

Let x be the number of families and y be the allotted amount.

No. of family, 20 50 100 200 300 500 1000 2000

rational Function

A rational function is of the form , where and are

polynomial functions and .

Application of Rational Function
Example 2
Your High School is organizing an event for alumni. The planning committee decides to
rent a large space and get dinner catered. The space costs P12,500 for the evening and
each guest is an additional P300 for the dinner.
To honor the 5 oldest alumni, the committee will not charge them for dinner. Instead,
their dinners will be included in the total cost to the committee.
Write a function representing the cost per paying attendee.
Let x be the number of alumni attending
and f(x) is the cost per paying attendee

How much is the total 6 hours
parking fee after n hours 8 hours
during normal 12 hours
weekdays? Write a
function that represents
the total payment a
customer will pay during
weekdays.

Piecewise Function
Piecewise function is a function defined by two or
more functions over a specified domain.

Application of piecewise Function
Example 2
A mobile phone company offers the following plan
• P400 per month buys 60mins of call
• Additional time costs P4 per minute of call.

Write a function that represents the total monthly cost as a function of the
number of minutes spent on calls (t).
Use the function to find and
𝐶 ( 𝑥 )=
{ 400 , 0 ≤ 𝑡 ≤ 60
400 + 4 ( 𝑡 − 60 ) ,𝑡 >60
