Lesson 1: Real Life Functions

What do you need to know:

determine functions and

relations;
represent real-life situations
using functions, including
piecewise functions.

Mrs. Clear P. Jamero, LPT

PRE-ASSESSMENT
ACTIVITY
What is RELATION?

A relation is a set of ordered

pairs. The domain of a relation
is the set of first coordinates.
The range is the set of second
coordinates.
ordered pairs
( x, y )

X domain/input
Y range/output
{(2,4),(3,5),(4,6),(5,7)}

Domain
{2,3,4,5}

Range
{4,5,6,7}
Examples of relation:

• {(1,7),(2,6),(3,5),(4,4)}
• {(8,e),(7,d),(6,c),(5,b)}
• A motorcycle and its plate
number.
• A student and his/her ID
number.
What is FUNCTION?

A function is a relation in
which each element of the
domain corresponds to exactly
one element of the range.
Representation of
Relation in Several
Ways

 Mapping Diagram
 Table of Values
 Graph
 Equation
1. Mapping Diagram
2. Table of Values
3. Graph
Vertical Line Test

A graph represents a
function if and only if no
vertical line intersects the
graph in more than one
point.
4. Equation

Clue: If the
exponent of y
is even number
the equation is
not a function.
ALL FUNCTIONS ARE
RELATIONS, BUT NOT
ALL RELATIONS ARE
FUNCTIONS.
Functions as
Representations of Real-
Life Situations

𝒚= 𝒇 ( 𝒙)
Thus, the function notation
tells you that y is a function
of x.
Example:

1. Circumference of a CIRCLE
Example:

2. A SHADOW
Example:
3. Driving a Car
Example 1

If you want to buy fruit shakes for

your friends and each fruit shake costs
₱99.00, represent the cost of x fruit
shakes.
Solution: Let,
 function
 number of fruit shakes bought
Example 2
Gwy is earning ₱550.00 per
day to do a certain job,
represent the salary of Gwy in
n days.
Solution: Let,
 function
 number of days
Example 3

Give a function B that can

represent the amount of battery
charge of a cellular phone in h
hour, if 12% of battery was lost
every hour.
Solution: Let,
B  function
 number of hours lost or
consumed
What is PIECEWISE
FUNCTION?

A piecewise function or
compound function is a
function defined by multiple
subfunctions, where each
subfunction applies to a certain
interval of the main function’s
domain.
Examples:
Example 1
A user is charged ₱350.00
monthly for a particular mobile
plan, which includes 150 free
text messages. Messages in
excess of 150 are charged
₱2.00 each. Represent the
monthly t(m) where m is the
number of messages spent in
a month.
Example 2

A certain milk bar costs ₱12.00

per piece. However, if you buy
more than 5 pieces, they will
mark down to a price of ₱10.00
per piece. Use a piecewise
function to represent the cost in
terms of the number of milk bar
bought.
Smash it up!
A. Fill in each blank to make a true
statement.
1. Suppose that a set of ordered pairs has
no elements having the same first
coordinates. Such a set is called a(n)
______.
2. A method of determining whether or not
a graph represents a function is called the
______.
3. The symbol f(x) is read as ______.
4-5. For the function {(3,4),(6,0),(-3,-1)},
the set {3,6,-3) is called the _____, and the
set {4,0,-1} is called the _____.
B. Answer each of the following.
1. Your Business Math teacher wants your class to
run a T-shirt Printing Business and has agreed to
provide up to ₱50,000.00 of his own money to help
the class started. To determine the profitability of
the business, the class needs to know how much it
will cost to produce the printed shirts and how
many can the class expect to sell for a given price.
The class has identified the following costs:
Heat press machine ₱24 480.00
T-shirt in bulk ₱120.00 each
Transfers to press onto each t-shirt ₱40.00 each

Express the cost C of producing x printed shirt

as cost function.

C(x) = 160x + 24 480

2. A videoke machine can be rented at
₱1,000.00 for four days, but for the fifth
day onwards, an additional cost of
₱400.00 per day is added. Represent the
cost of renting a videoke machine as a
piecewise function of the number of
days it is rented.

Solution:
Let x be the number of days the videoke
machine rented.
Journal Writing

1. How do we determine if the

relation represents a function?
How about if given a graph?
2. As an assumptionist, how can
you relate the lessons in the
