B.I.G. – 5W’s and a how?

Starter: Working in pairs or groups, look carefully at the image and

annotate your sheet considering the six questions.

TIP! – The image is of Dubai, but aim to think of cities in general!

Urban Trends
• How is the world’s urban population changing?
Over half the world’s population now lives in cities. By 2030, it is expected that 60 per
cent of the world’s population will live in urban areas, and by 2050 it will be 70 per cent.
This process is known as urbanisation.

• Where are the world’s largest cities?

The world’s largest cities, with populations over ten million, are known as megacities.
In 1975 there were only four megacities – Tokyo, New York, Mexico City and São
Paolo. Today, there are over twenty and the number is rising year by year.

London, the UK’s largest city, is not among the

world’s megacities. Its population is not predicted
to reach ten million until 2030. That might give
you an idea of how big megacities really are.

Dubai has a population of only 2.8 million!

All of us will: Describe the location of the worlds megacities (Grade 4)

GRAPHICAL SKILLS
“You will spend much time learning geographical
skills throughout the year. These skills are best learnt
when seeing them in a real setting!”

Most of us will: Compare statistical data on rates of urbanisation (Grade 5)

How do rates of urbanisation vary around the world?
Rates of urbanisation differ between continents.
The highest rates of urbanisation are in poorer,
low-income countries (LICs) in Asia and
Africa. In
most of these countries, a majority of the
population still live in rural areas and the rate of
rural–urban migration is high. The population
of cities is younger, so the rate of natural
increase is also high.

There are lower rates of urbanisation in richer, high income countries (HICs) in Europe,
North America and Oceania. In these countries, urbanisation has slowed down as the
majority of the population already live, in cities.

The urban population is ageing, so the rate of natural increase has also slowed down. One
exception to this pattern is South America, with many newly emerging economies (NEEs)
like Brazil. Here, urbanisation happened earlier and has slowed down, even though these
countries are not yet among the richer, high-income countries.

Can you apply what you have learnt today to an exam
question?

The world’s urban population has risen

exponentially, rising rapidly from 1985 onwards.

Total population in the world has risen

exponentially (year on year).

The world’s rural population rose until

1995, when it then steadied and finally began
to fall in 2010
