BASIC CORRECTIONS

LAYERS AND LAYER MASK

ADDING TEXT IN PHOTOSHOP
LEARNING AT WORK
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson you are expected to:
1. Apply basic photo corrections
2. Manage Layers
3. Apply Layer Mask
4. Add Text in an Image
STEP 1: CREATE A NEW FILE IN PHOTOSHOP
WITH DIMENSIONS: 2000 X 1600 PIXELS
• By creating a new file you are already creating
a new layer. But we will discuss layers in a bit.
• This is different from simply opening an image
directly in Photoshop because if you are simply
opening an image, you will not have any
control on the width and height of the image,
whereas if you create a new layer/file you will
be able to control how wide and how tall the
image will become.
STEP 2: PLACE THE IMAGE OF THE GIRL ON THE
NEW LAYER CREATED
• Click and drag from the corner of the image until
its width is equal to the width of the background
layer. Hit enter to successfully place the image of
the girl.
• The background layer is the original layer with
the Dimensions: 2000 x 1600 pixels.
• To resize the image, go to the image menu and
choose image size, or simply press Ctrl + Alt + I
STEP 3: ADJUST THE SIZE OF THE IMAGE TO 1000
X 800 PIXELS
• Remember we originally set the
dimensions to 2000 x 1600
pixels, now we will change it to
something smaller. This is to
improve the image quality of
our final work.
• This introduces us to the topic:
Basic Photo Corrections.
LESSON 3: BASIC PHOTO CORRECTIONS

• Resolution – the term refers to the number of small squares known as pixels that describe
an image and establish its details. The higher the resolution, the bigger the file size will
be, and the image will be much clearer.
• Pixel – which means picture element, is a single point in a graphic element.
• PPI (Pixels per Inch) – is the number of pixels per inch in a digital monitor.
• DPI (Dots per Inch) – is the physical number of dots per inch of ink in a printed
document.
• Preview Window – is a new feature introduced in Photoshop CC which will give you a
live preview of what the image looks like as you change its size and or resolution.
STEP 4: USE EITHER SPOT HEALING BRUSH TOOL, HEALING BRUSH TOOL, OR
PATCH TOOL TO REMOVE FRECKLES AND PIMPLES ON THE GIRL'S FACE.
SWITCH BETWEEN THESE TOOLS UNTIL YOU ARE SATISFIED.

• Spot Healing Brush Tool – removes blemishes and objects.

(Perfect for spots, pimples, uneven texture, etc.)
• Healing Brush Tool – paints with a sample or pattern to repair
imperfections in an image. (perfect for levelling color in a surface.)
• Patch Tool – repairs imperfections in a selected area of an image
using a sample or patter. Also perfect for levelling color.
Note: Remember to rasterize the layer before you can do any edits or
corrections. Right click on the layer then choose “Rasterize layer” or
go to Layer Menu, choose Rasterize then choose either Layer or All
Layers.
OTHER TOOLS FOR BASIC CORRECTIONS
• Red Eye Tool - removes the red
reflection caused by a flash.
• Clone Stamp Tool - paints with a
sample of an image.
• Pattern Stamp Tool – paints with a part
of an image as a pattern.
STEP 5: PLACE THE HEARTS
OUTLINE AS A NEW LAYER. THEN
USE EASY TRANSFORM OR SIMPLY
THE MOVE TOOL, TO ADJUST THE
SIZE AND POSITION OF THE
HEARTS OUTLINE.
• Again you can drag the corners of
the layer to expand it to
satisfaction as well as moving it
to the desired position.
• Press the enter key to complete
the placement.
STEP 6: PLACE THE BEAUTIFUL SCENERY IMAGE
ON THE PHOTOSHOP DOCUMENT.
• Again, drag the corners of the newly added layer until it’s the same height as your
background layer.
• Hit the enter key to complete the placement.
• From the right side, on the layers panel, drag the beautiful scenery layer to below the girl
layer.
Note: We did not really lose the beautiful scenery layer, we just put it on the back of all our
layers. Hence we are introduced to Lesson 4: Layers
LESSON 4: LAYERS

• Layers -are simply the individual images,

texts and or objects that we place in a
photoshop document, a top view of these
layers will result to the final image that we
save in our preferred format.
• Layers are found at the right side of the
photoshop interface inside the Panels section.
• You can rename, rearrange, hide/show
visibility, style, blend a layer and many more.
STEP 7: TURN OFF VISIBILITY OF
THE HEARTS OUTLINE AS WELL
AS THE BEAUTIFUL SCENERY
IMAGE.
• By turning visibility off for
the hearts and beautiful
scenery layers, you are now
left with just the girl
STEP 8 : CHOOSE THE QUICK SELECTION TOOL AND SELECT THE
WHITE BACKGROUND OF THE GIRL.

• Before doing this, make sure that you

have the girl layer selected.
• Use add and subtract to modify your
selection, as you drag the quick
selection tool around the girl, making
sure that you have selected only the
white background as efficiently as you
can.
• After selecting the white background,
right click then choose select inverse.
STEP 9: FROM THE OPTIONS
BAR, CHOOSE REFINE EDGE
LESSON 5 : LAYER
MASKS
• Masks isolate and protect parts of an image, just as masking tape protects window panes or trim from
paint when a house is painted.
• The 5 Types of Masks
1. Layer Mask – allows you to control how much of that layer will be visible.
2. Vector Mask – similar to a layer mask except it offers a well defined opaque visible area bounded by a hard edge.
3. Quick Mask – provides a temporary pixel – based visualization of a selection.
4. Adjustment Layer Mask – similar to a layer mask but this allows you to define which areas in the image will be
affected by an individual adjustment.

5. Clipping Mask – this allows a layer mask or vector mask to apply not only to the base layer on which
it’s saved.
USING REFINE EDGE

• You can also access the refine edge option by going

to the Select Menu then choosing Refine Edge.
• This option helps you select in between strands of
hair, fur or any smaller details of an object and
isolate it from the main background.
• The pink areas indicate the background which will
be hidden as we add a layer mask in the next step.
• So, be sure to click on the smaller white areas in
between the hair strands efficiently, while the refine
edge window is open. Then press enter or click ok.
STEP 10: ADD A LAYER
MASK
• Click add a layer mask from the
bottom of the panels section.
• At this point, the white
background around the girl layer
should already be removed so, you
can verify this by turning off
visibility to all layers except the
girl’s.
STEP 11: RESTORE VISIBILITY FOR
BOTH THE HEART OUTLINE AS WELL
AS THE BEAUTIFUL SCENERY OUTLINE.
• From the tools panel, select type
tool then horizontal type tool.
• Click anywhere, then start typing
“I love to travel.” STEP 12: INSERT THE TEXT: "I LOVE
• From the options bar, set the font TO TRAVEL"
style as “showcard gothic”, then
font color should be violet. You
can drag the corner of the type
layer to make it bigger and move
it to the top of the image.
• Make sure that the type layer is
on top of the hearts layer.
STEP 13: RIGHT CLICK ON THE NEWLY ADDED TYPE
LAYER OR TEXT LAYER THEN CHOOSE BLENDING
OPTIONS
• Blending options is part of Lesson 4: Layers. As
your assignment please read on page 44 – 45 of
the textbook to learn more about blending options
for a layer.
• Since we have very limited time, I need you to
proactively explore these options in you free time,
note: this is different from your asynchronous
activity, this is simply an assignment for self
study.
STEP 14: SELECT STROKE AND
CHOOSE THE COLOR OF THE
STROKE WHICH SHOULD BE
WHITE.
STEP15: PLACE THE VECTORS,
AROUND THE WORLD VECTOR,
LOCATION VECTOR AND
VOLKSWAGEN VECTOR AND DESIGN
TO YOUR SATISFACTION.
