Default IS-IS Router Setup
IS-IS Level-1 Routers are equivalent to Internal OSPF routers.
These routers only communicate to routers within their own areas.
By default, all Cisco routers are configured
c
as Level-1-2 Routers,
which means they create the detailed Intra-Area database like the
OSPF LSA Type 1/2 Database and the Level-2 Database as well, the
OSPF LSA Type 3 Database.
Depending on the neighbor capabilities the router establishes and
exchange the appropriate database.
The only type of neighbor relationship that will be setup between 2
routers in separate areas is Level-2.
IS-IS Level-2 Routers
If you have a Transit Area and want to minimize the Memory utilization,
you can configure the router as a Level-2 Only Router.
This will configure the router to only create and exchange the Level-2
c
database.
The Level-2 database contains the summary information about all the
routes Inter or Intra Area Routes.
A Level-2 router will only establish a neighbor relationship based on Level-
2 with the neighbor regardless of what the other router has been
configured with.
The Level-1-2 router will only exchange a Level-2 database with this
router.
Configuring a Level-2 Only Router
The “IS-type Level-2-only” command under the IS-IS Routing process
configures a router to create and exchange a Level-2 Database only.

Configuring IS-IS Circuit types
You do have the ability to configure a Level-1-2 router to establish a Level-2
neighbor relationship on a interface basis.
Although it will maintain both the Databases, it will only configure a Level-2
c
neighbor relationship based on this configuration.
The following configuration assumes that the router is configured based on
the default Level-1-2 IS-Type configuration
