THE FAULT BEHIND THE CLOSURE The biggest one was its placement in a Bird and in the dormant Campo de Calatrava Volcanic Field, with the EU banning its development until environmental protection measures were adopted (moving a portion of the protected area and downsizing the airport facilities). It took four years to open. In 2006, Madrid's major airport expanded to serve 70 million people a year, easing overcrowded facilities. All airlines that had considered operating from Ciudad Real elected instead to fly from Madrid, a more convenient choice for travelers from the capital. Ciudad Real airport is roughly 200 kilometers from Madrid, making vehicle travels to the airport over two hours lengthy. Had a station been built on the Madrid–Seville high-speed rail line, travel times to the airport would be more manageable. Currently, train travel from Madrid to Ciudad Real takes around 50 minutes. Only the station-to-terminal bridge was constructed before bankruptcy. Finally, the airport opened during the worst years of Spain's financial crisis, which led to a decline in passenger traffic at all Spanish airports, including Ciudad Real. PLANNED VS USAGE
