ENVIRONMENT AND

PUBLIC HEALTH

Environment Issues
POLLUTION

 Pollution is the
introduction or presence
of harmful substances or
contaminants into the
natural environment that
causes adverse effects
Environmental Hazards
 It is estimated that 25% of global disease
burden and 25% of all deaths can be attributed to
environmental factors and about 36% of this
burden affects children from 0-14 years of age.

 Often man is responsible for pollution of is

environment through urbanization, industrialization
and other human activities
The household, workplace, outdoor and
transportation environments pose risks to
health in a number of different ways
from the poor quality of air that many
people breathe, to the hazards related to
unsafe water, poor sanitation and
hygiene.
Why is Environmental Health Important?

Maintaining a healthy environment is central to

increasing quality of life and years of healthy
life. Globally, nearly 25 percent of all deaths and
the total disease burden can be attributed to
environmental factors.
Comprehensive Environmental Pollution Index (CEPI)

The index captures the various dimensions

of environment including air, water and land. Instead
of having separate indices for air, water, soil,
Comprehensive Environmental Pollution Index
(CEPI) combines all of them in a single index, to
assign a numerical value to the extent of pollution in
an industrial cluster.
CEPI of Different Countries 2021
Country Name Pollution Index
Mongolia 91.84
Afghanistan 89.62
Egypt 83.92
Bangladesh 84.94
India 78.89
Pakistan 73.41
Sri Lanka 60.03
UAE 50.66
Japan 39.34
USA 38.17
Finland 11.79
Environmental Issues
1. Air pollution
Global Warming
(GHG Effect)
Ozone depletion
Acid rain
2. Water pollution
3. Land pollution
4. Noise pollution
 Air pollution:
i. Global warming - Greenhouse gases
(GHGs)
ii. Acid Rain
 Water Pollution:
i. non provision of safe drinking water
ii. Waste water disposal
iii. Marine pollution
 Land pollution

 ALL THESE RESULTS IN:

 Loss of Biodiversity (variety of life on earth at
all levels-from genes to ecosystem
Sources of atmospheric pollution

 Natural:
i. Volcano's – Sox, Ash, PM
ii.Decaying of vegetables

 Anthropogenic
Sources of Atmospheric pollution
 Anthropogenic:
i. Burning of fossil fuel
ii. automobiles
iii. Marine vessels
iv. Industrial activity
v. Controlled burn practices, used in agriculture and forestry management
vi. Landfill – Methane gas
vii. Hydroelectric power station
viii.Refrigerators, ACs, aerosol containers - CFC
Environment Issues of
International Importance
Light energy (white arrows) emitted by
the sun warms the earth's surface, which
reflects the energy as heat (orange arrows)
that warms the atmosphere. Much of the
heat is captured by greenhouse gas
molecules such as water, carbon dioxide,
and methane
Global warming
 An increase in temperature of earth near
surface air and ocean.
 Problem started since the beginning of 20th
century
 Now temperature has increased by 1.8-6.40C
 Major gases of global warming include: CO2,
Nox, Sox, CH4, O3, water vapors
Impacts of Global
warming
i.Shifting of weather
ii. Increase in temperature leading to heat
stroke, dehydration, death
iii. Weather: storms, floods, draught, sea
level rising, melting of glaciers, rise of
sea level
iv. Increase in vector borne diseases
v. Effects on crops
Acid Rain(damage to
plant life)
ACID RAIN
