BEGINNERS
Introduction to GIMP

GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation

Program. It is a freely distributed program for
such tasks as photo retouching, image
composition and image authoring.
It has many capabilities. It can be used as a
simple paint program, an expert quality photo
retouching program, an online batch processing
system, a mass production image renderer, an
image format converter, etc.
When we open gimp we find this.

Dock window: Layers,

Channels,etc.
For our activity, we need to pay attention to these few items.

Lasso too. We can In the tool box:

select big areas
following predefined
areas

Brush tool. Using it we can paint manually.

Paint bucket. It is used to

fill the selected areas
with the lasso tool

Foreground and
background colour. By
clicking it we can choose
or select a colour.

Layers mode

Initial image. It must be placed

on top of the pile of layers.
The layer mode in Multiply.

The painting layers should be created as transparent

and the mode layer put as Normal .

1. You have to bring an image of your choice in black and White. As the picture
used in the lesson. You can download from internet and save it in a pen drive.

2. When you open gimp you should save your image at the desktop. Very
Important! The native format of gimp is xcf file, So when you finish you shoud
export your file to png or jpg image.

3. You can use the tools that you have seen during the lesson.For that reason you
have to know and remember the basics about layers, selection and painting
tools.
