 Whereas(contrast) and While (time)
are two conjunctions which are often
confused due to the close similarity
in their meanings, but which should
be used differently

 While can be used to introduce a time-clause.
While expresses time and introduces a time
clause. While means: - at the same time or
during the time.
We use while when we want to talk about things
that happen simultaneously.

While Example :
- While the kids were having a nap, the mom
could have a relaxing bath
- While she was playing, I was studying
- I turn off the TV while my brother eating in
front of it

 Whereas cannot be used to introduce a time-
clause. Whereas expresses a contrast, it is used
to express a contrast between two fact or two
ideas and means the same as (on the other
hand). Whereas cannot be uses to expresses
time.

Example :
Whereas - Imam likes horror movies whereas Andy
mostly watches action movies
- Istami speaks Spanish and Japanese fluently
whereas his sister Ajmi isn’t good at
languages at all
- Hadi’s body was well developed and
muscular whereas his brother Lifa who’s
skinny

When both clauses have the same subject, it
is possible to drop subject + be after while
• While roaming around the city we saw many
interesting sight. ( While we roaming around the
city we saw many interesting sight )
• While walking past the post office, I suddenly
remembered that I hadn’t posted the letter.

While also can be used as a subordinating
conjunction showing contrast. In this case, it is
similar to whereas
• While I like all kinds of music, my girlfriend
only listens to western music
• While I eat all the food on the table, my brother
only eats meat
• While she works for 3 jobs in 1 day, her husband
does nothing except sleeping
