You may heared the term Business Intelligence or BI
but what does that really mean ???

Business Intelligence (BI), a term nowadays associated

with information technology, has been evolving for
over 150 years.

Business Intelligence existed before technology.

Although its origins predate the invention of

computers, it was only after they were widespread that
BI grew in relevance and its development henceforth
became paired with the evolution of computers and
databases.

BI!
BI First use of the term
The first use of the term “business intelligence” is widely attributed to Mr. Richard Miller Devens, in his book
Cyclopaedia.

He used it to describe how Sir Henry Furnese, a successful banker, profited from information by actively gathering and
acting on it before his competition. This pointed out the fact that it was more reliable to use data and empirical evidence,
rather than gut instinct, to develop a business strategy. The idea was further enhanced by others who saw value in
information.
Business Intelligence BI!
• The need for BI was derived from the concept that managers
with inaccurate or incomplete information will tend, on
average, to make worse decisions than if they had better
information.

• BI attempts to solve this problem by analyzing current data that

is ideally presented on a dashboard of quick metrics designed to
support better decisions.
BI? There are several different defination
but to put it simply:

Is about delivering

BI Relevant & Reliable Information

To The Right People
AT the Right Time

With the goal of

Achieving Better Decisions Faster

To do this it requires
methods and programs
Imagine BI Functioning like a grocery store!
• When you enter a grocery store and are looking for specific items say eggs milk and bananas you do not need to
find an employee to ask them where to look instead grocery stores are organized into aisles and signs that make the
store relatively simple to navigate.

• Now  imagine the items in the store are like your business's data and you need to collect information on
production  billable hours and sales goals you are likely to go to three different experts and ask them where you
can find this information then you will go to someone else and have them compile it for you.

• Bi is all about taking your messy  information and turning it into a tidy and accessible grocery store this enables
you to navigate your data on your own and find what you need without relying on others organizations no longer
have to dig through complex webs of linked spreadsheets analyzing the data manually and mashing together
reports instead employees can use BI systems to request the information .
BI is a large and complex field including :

● Performance management

● Analytics

● Predictive modeling

● Data &Text mining

● A lot more
Using Bi offers significant advantage when

The Mandate for Business Analytics
IDC predicts that by 2020, organizations able to analyze all relevant
data and deliver actionable information will achieve an extra $430
billion in productivity benefits over their less analytically oriented
peers.

Information is the new asset. Entire business models are being

disrupted as a result.
Consider:

• The taxi company Uber owns no cars.

• The media owner Facebook creates no content.
• The hospitality provider AirBnB owns no rooms.

A number of factors, including changes in employee/customer

behavior, explosion in data sourcing & creation rates, & technology
improvements have created an environment where analytics can be
transformational.
