FOOD CHAINS

AHMAD
Grade 5
What is a food chain
 In scientific terms, a food chain chronological
pathway or an order that shows the flow of
energy from one organism to the other. In a
community which has producers, consumers,
and decomposers, the energy flows in a specific
pathway. Energy is not created or destroyed.
But it flows from one level to the other,
through organisms
What is a food web
 Many interconnected food chains make up a
food web when you sometimes, a single
organism gets eaten by many predators or it
eats many other organisms . this is when a food
chain does not represent the energy flow in a
proper manner because there are many trophic
levels that interconnect. This is where food web
cones into place. It shows the interactions
between different organisms in an ecosystem
Food chains underwater
 Food chains underwater are the same as on
land but mostly the producers, primary
consumer, and secondary consumer an
example .
 A food chain in the ocean begins with tiny one
called diatoms, which make their own food
from sunlight. Shrimplike creatures eat the
diatoms. Small fish eat the shrimplike creatures
and bigger fish eat the small fish
What is a producer
 Plants are called producers.
 This is because they produce their own food!
  They do this by using light energy from the
Sun, carbon dioxide from the air and water
from the soil to produce food.
 This is how they make sugar.
 The process is called photosynthesis
What are omnivores
 Omnivores are Animals that eat
both animals AND plants.
 Humans are also omnivores! Because we also
eat fruits vegetables and animals.
 For example
 Bears they are omnivores
 They eat plants and animal
What are herbivores
 An animal that feeds on plant.
 2 facts:
 Herbivores are important link in the food chain
as they consume plants in order to receive
carbs produced by a plant
 They are at the second level at the food chain
What are carnivores
 A carnivore means that it is a meat eater for
example
 A lion
 A shark
 A crocodile
 Eats only other animal they don not eat plants,
fruits and vegetables
What is a predator
 A predator is an animal that eats its prey.
 For example
 A lion is a predator.
 And the deer is its prey.
What is a prey
 A prey is an animal that is eaten by its
predator.
 For example
 A fish is a prey
 And the bear is a predator.
