The Trial Lens Set

The Trial Frame

The Phoropter
Trial Lens Set
Trial Lens Set
• It is a set of biconcave and biconvex minus/plus
lenses designed to neutralize the refractive error of
patients.
• Is usually put in a carrying case, drawer, or wooden
cabinet
• TLS include:
- positive/negative spherical lenses
- positive/negative cylindrical lenses
- prisms and accessory lenses
Trial Lens Set
TLS(spherical lenses)
• Positive lenses: black color rims with biconvex
lenses
In some sets the rims come in green color (old
sets)
• Negative lenses: red color rims with biconcave
lenses
TLS(cylindrical lenses)
• They have same characteristics when it comes
to color and type of lens.
• These lenses have two lines opposite to each
other on their borders to indicate the cylinder
axis position
TLS(prisms and accessory lenses)
• Prisms: these are present from 1 diopter to 10
diopters.
• Accessory lenses include:
Occluder, pinhole, stenopeic slit, polarizing
filter, red/green filters, madox, fogging lens,
plano lens, cross cylinder
TLS
• The set comes in a holding tray with beveled
slots for fast and easy insertion of the lenses
• The lenses has the highest degree of accuracy
to determine VA, due to the additive power
curve design.
It allows the compensation for thickness and air
spacing between lenses
TLS
• The lens rims can be either plastic or
aluminum.
• Presented with one sided coded tips to show
the power and correct position of the lens
• High powers (>6 diopters) have reduced
aperture to reduce aberations.
• 25 mm diameter meniscus lenses
Trial Frame
• A spectacle frame with variable adjustments
used to fit the trial lenses and perform the
refractive test easily.
• Manufactured for durability, yet at the same
time for being of a light-weight.
Trial Frame
Trial Frame
• The trial frame includes the following features:
-horizontal and vertical bridge adjustments
-saddle bridge for a comfortable nose fit
-separate PD adjustment
-adjustment for temple length and angle
-adjustment for cylinder axis
-numbered scale for the cylinder axis
-spacing for lens holding(2 for sphere and 3 for
cylinder)
Trial Frame
Phoropter
Phoropter
• An instrument used by eye care
professionals(ECP) during an eye exam .
• The word “phoropter” and the design of the
instrument are registered trademarks of
Reichert Inc. NY USA(American Optical)
Instruments for other manufacturers are referred
to as “manual refractors”
Phoropter
• Typically, the patient places his head behind the
phoropter and looks at a chart placed at optical
infinity (20 feet or 6 meters) to test distance
refraction. And looks at a chart placed 30-40
cm for near refraction.
• Phoropters can also measure: phorias,
accommodative amplitudes, accommodative
leads/lags, horizontal and vertical vergence,
and more
Phoropter
• The lenses of the phoropter are measured in
0.25 diopters increments.
• Cylinder powers are available in pluses and
minuses for Ophthalmologists and Orthoptists
use the plus power while Optometrists use the
minus power cylinder
• The phoropter also includes prismatic lenses
which are used to analyze binocular vision and
treat orthoptic problems.
TLS/Phoropter
• Advantages: • Advantages:
-mobility -lenses are properly
-simpler form preserved
-easier and shorter testing
time
-easier fog test
-other refractive
measurements
TLS/Phoropter
• Disadvantages: • Disadvantages:
-cleaning lenses -may generate cylindrical
-weight on patient face measurement errors due to
head tilt
-hides the face of the
patient
