Objectives: Write and solve absolute value

inequalities and use them to solve problems.

Do Now
Directions: Solve each absolute value equation. Be sure
to show your work.
Absolute Value Inequalities
● If an inequality uses < or < and these symbols point to the
variable, the solution uses “and”
● “Less thand ”
● If an inequality uses > or > and these symbols point away from
the variable in the solution, the solution uses “or”
● “Greator ”
● Example:

|x| < 3 |x| > 4

x > -3 and x < 3 x < -4 or x > 4
Steps
1. Isolate the absolute value
2. Rewrite the inequality as a conjunction (‘and’) or a disjunction (‘or’) statement
3. Remove the absolute value and split up your inequality. (positive and negative)
● In the negative inequality, you must negate the opposite side and
reverse the symbol
● Example:

|x| < 1
x < 1 and x > -1
1. Solve each inequality and get your solution
2. Rewrite the solution as a compound inequality
No real solution? All real solutions?

● The distance from 0 can never be less than or less than or equal to a negative
number. In this case, the answer is NO SOLUTION

● The distance from 0 can always be greater than or greater than or equal to a
negative number. In this case, the answer is ALL REAL SOLUTIONS
Example #1
Example #2
Group Work
● Within your group, split up the work evenly, and individually work on your
problems
● Once everyone is finished, take turns sharing your work and showing how you
got your answer
○ Use the white boards and dry erase markers to write out your work and
explain it
○ *Be sure to pay attention to your group members and take notes. This worksheet will be
collected at the end of class*
● If you have finished sharing, use the iPad’s to work on the Unit 1 Review on
google classroom
Homework

Complete the homework worksheet that is

being passed out and hand it in tomorrow
morning.
Summary
● Less thAND
○ Inequalities are pointing TO the variable
● GreatOR
○ Inequalities are pointing AWAY from the variable
● When writing the negative inequality, you must reverse the sign,
AND negate the entire opposite side
● If the absolute value is less than or less than or equal to a negative
number, there is NO SOLUTION
● If the absolute value is greater than or greater than or equal to a
negative number, there is ALL REAL SOLUTIONS
Exit Ticket
Complete the exit ticket
and hand it in on your
way out of the class, or
once you complete it.
