English Religion Life of Pi Jan 2022 GRP
Hisham’s point of view on Pi's life is marked by three different religions that influence him
over the course of his life. ... Finally, he discovers Islam, the
religion of Mohammed, when the second Mr. Kumar tells him
reference to religion in the that it's the religion of the Beloved. Pi's belief in three very distinct
religions is a source of conflict in his early life.
life of Pi
Pi is raised as a Hindu who practices vegetarianism. At the age of
fourteen, he investigates Christianity and Islam, and decides to
become an adherent of all three religions, much to his parents'
dismay (and his religious mentors' frustration), saying he "just
wants to love God".
Shaikh’s Ideology
Throughout the extract of The Life of pi explicitly mentions or symbolizes the faith and
ideology in God and Religion, Moreover Pi goes through a lot of emotional survival that
deals with Religion and Faith. His first encounter with all three religions (Christianity,
Muslim, and Hinduism) was when he talked to the three Wisemans. , furthermore the story
also describes his journey and his encounter to all three religion Christianity, Muslim, and
Hinduism. Even though Pi does mention that religion isn’t true but nevertheless believes
that without its life would be harder to live with a mentality of an atheist in contrast to
religion
An addition to it we believe that the author included the theme of religion to illustrate to
the readers the importance of faith that Pi has in God and his will to live. The author uses
religion to introduce the character, as it is mentioned to a great extent throughout. The theme
of religion helps the readers understand and explain his actions and his reasons for them.
For example, even though Pi lost his family amidst the seas, he had not given up faith and
hope. He still believed that miracles could happen, and never gave up
Quotes from the book of Pi
that refer to religion
•In the author’s note, the following sentence is said: “I have a story that will
make you believe God”. This quote implies that Pi already does believe in
God, strongly enough that he is confident he can persuade others to almost do
the same. It also connotates that Pi is a religious individual; and has a deep
understanding of religion and a lot of faith in God.
•Another quote from the book that suggests the theme of religion is, “But
religion is more than rite and ritual. There is what the rite and ritual stand
for”. This meaningful phrase suggests that to Pi, religion is not just about
ceremonies and rituals; it is far more than that. Instead, we can understand that
the universe only makes sense to Pi through his religion. This also suggests
that he knows what all the good and bad acts are.
• The quote “The presence of God is the finest of rewards.” Is also used by
the author in the book. This quote may be connotating when a miracle or
surprising event happens, you know you have been rewarded by God for good
actions, thoughts, etc. Again, this is very religious; displaying Pi’s faith, trust,
and understanding of God once again. – Menuka
